Essie Mae Allen

Essie Mae Allen departed this life peacefully on Monday, September 9, 2013 at NHC-Healthcare in Town & Country, Missouri.

She was born on December 3, 1941 in Whiteville, Tennessee, the seventh child born to the union of Ellis and Elizabeth Crues. In 1945, the family moved to St. Louis, Missouri where Essie accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized by the Reverend I. T. Moore of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. She graduated from Vashon High School in the St. Louis Public School System and received postsecondary education at Harris-Stowe Teacher’s College.

Essie would later marry her high school sweetheart Clifton Allen and move to Chicago, Illinois. This marriage produced three beloved children: Crystal, Christopher and Christina. While living in Chicago, Essie was employed by the U.S. Postal Service.

In 1967, Essie returned to St. Louis, and was employed for many years by Blue Cross Blue Shield Insurance Company. She began a second career with MCI (Verizon), where she was a dedicated, loyal employee until retiring in 2007. Essie spent her latter years as a member of the Monumental Missionary Baptist Church in St. Louis City.

Love of music and dancing were defining characteristics of Essie’s life. Among her favorite musical artists were Tyrone Davis, Al Green and Aretha Franklin. Some of Essie’s other cherished hobbies included cooking (especially southern fried chicken and spicy spaghetti), shopping, and fashion. She loved to celebrate her birthday and Christmas making December her favorite month of the year. She will always be remembered for her buoyant energy, for her infectious smile, and for her tireless energy and distinctive style and flair.

Essie was preceded in death by both her mother and father; one sister, Evelyn Crues; and brothers George, Ellis and James Crues. She leaves to cherish her memory three children: Crystal Johnson (Ronald), Fontana, CA, Christopher Allen, Sacramento, CA and Christina Causey (Mark), Dallas, TX; four grandchildren: Nadia, Breanne, Jordan and Quincy; two great-grandchildren: Kadyn and Jordan Jr.; three sisters: Christine Reid, Baltimore, MD, Barbara Lusk, Kansas City, MO, and Dorothy Wright, St. Louis, MO; a brother, Floyd Crues (Drucilla), Ballwin, MO; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters-in-law, and other dear relatives and friends.

Your mother will truly be missed. She was always full of fun and very giving. No one could wear that color hair better than your mom. I didn’t know she worked at the post office in Chicago.

My sincerest sympathy to my family. My prayers are with you and I know God will take care of you. I will miss Essie but have fond memories of parties in the basement at Big Momma’s and all the carrying-on we would do in the good old days! Love, Aunt Bernice

Beautiful, energetic, loving and always sharp dressed is what i will remember most about Mrs. Essie/Aunt Essie, (don’t know how or when she became my aunt though). When Mrs. Essie entered a room her smile was light a spot light and hair color, enough said right there, no one could where that color like she could. I’m praying that God gives you strength at this time of bereavement. May your heavy hearts be lifted in knowing, to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Rest In Peace Essie M. Allen. (Mama also sends her condolences)
