Mary Surrett

Mary Surrett, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, died on April 30 at the age of 76. She was a devoted teacher of young people with autism and intellectual disabilities for over 35 years. She loved camping with friends and family, reading good books, raising many cats (who were her other children) over the years, and Friday dinners with her dear friends, Donna, Ginny, Helen, Jan, Judi, and Pat. She is survived by her son, Joel; daughters, Nanci and Toni; sons-in-law, Karl and Thomas; and grandsons, Noah, Otto, and Salim. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to the Humane Society of Missouri or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

My deepest condolences to your family. I missed out on knowing Aunt Mary Gail for much of my life and I’m sorry I did. I will keep you all in my prayers and hope that God brings you comfort and peace as you grieve for your mother and friend.

We just now heard about the loss of our daughter’s dear, dear special school district teacher and friend. Mrs. Surrett was a wonderful mentor to a group of disabled girls, whom she still organized get-togethers with years after they graduated. They all loved her. Katie says, “She taught us how to cook, how to play dominoes, and how to do a lot of different jobs.” Her friends at Canterbury will all miss her. What a special lady she was! Our sincere condolences to her family.
