Melissa Frances Mullgardt

Melissa Frances Mullgardt (nee Kimes), 74, died peacefully in her sleep on June 8, 2015 in St. Louis, MO.

A memorial service will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church (4712 Clifton Ave) on June 20, 2015, 10:00 AM followed by a reception in celebration of her life.

Melissa was born on April 24, 1941 in Crockett, Texas to Stephen and Frances (Schrepel) Kimes. A proud Texan, she attended Spring Branch High School in Houston, TX where she graduated in 1959. She attended Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, VA where she received an art degree in 1963. She graduated from Washington University Medical School in 1965 as an occupational therapist. She worked for Special School District in St. Louis until her retirement.

Melissa was an incredibly gifted seamstress and artist. She was always generous with her time and talents and would go out of her way to help friend and stranger alike. She was an active member of the St. Louis Quilt Guild as well as with PEO, a philanthropic organization. She enjoyed camping, canoeing, and traveling the world with her beloved husband, Robert. She took up tap dancing upon her retirement. Her greatest joy, however, was being the most adored ‘Lovey” to her numerous grandchildren. Her kindness, gentle spirit, sense of humor, yearly Christmas ornaments and famous “Mullgardt Cookies” will truly be missed.

Mrs. Mullgardt is survived by her husband of 46 years, Robert Mullgardt; 2 sons: Christian Mullgardt and wife, Julia Farrell; Davidson Mullgardt and wife, Meaghan; 2 daughters: Amanda (Meg) Kaupp and husband, Boris; Anna Lay; as well as 9 grandchildren: Kelsey, Emma, Riley, Grace, William, Kai, Eleanor, Stanley, and Oliver. She is also survived by her sister, Gail Beil and brother, Brownlow Kimes.

Dear Mullgardt Family: It breaks our hearts when death separates us from the ones we love so much. We are reminded in the Bible that God sees our pain and sorrow and has promised that soon death will be no more.(Revelation 21:4) He will heal our broken hearts by resurrecting our precious loved ones to life again.(John :28,29) I hope in the days ahead as you reflect on Melissa’s life, and the beautiful memories left behind, that you will also find comfort in God’s promises to us for the near future. I am so sorry for your loss.

Of all the excellent Special School District staff I worked with over my years in St. Louis County schools, Melissa was my go-to person when there were children with not just motor needs, but learning problems I could not, as a counselor, define. She could see a child across a playground and be ready to help with care and resource definitions. Melissa was filled with love and the joy of life and was a true friend to all. May her Spirit live in us all.
