Roger P. English
Roger P. English, of St. Louis, Missouri passed away on December 10, 2015 at the age of 91.
He was born November 21, 1924 in Shelbyville, Illinois, the son of Elmer D. and Maurine Parrish English. He was the beloved husband of Alice Methudy English for 46 years. Alice passed away on December 23, 2015.
Roger was previously married for 20 years to Kathryn Goslee Crockett, who passed away in 1968. Roger was the loving father of Rebecca Lee (Christopher) D’Alleinne of Annandale, NJ, Sara Lynn (Humphrey) Crook of St Louis, MO, the late David H. English of San Rafael, CA. and stepfather to John T. Koch (Jane) of Aberystwyth, Wales,UK. Roger was a devoted grandfather to 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and a dear brother to the late Robert D. (Nordeka) English.
Roger was a graduate of Clayton High School and upon graduation, was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served overseas in the headquarters staff of the 8th Army under General Douglas MacArthur until February, 1946, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant in the Signal Corps. His posts included New Guinea, Philippine Islands and finally Yokohama, Japan as part of the Army of Occupation.
Upon returning to the U.S., Roger entered Harvard College and earned the degree of A.B., cum laude in 1949. Subsequently, he enrolled in Washington University School of Law, where he was awarded the degree of J.D. in 1952. His career was in the insurance business and he obtained the professional designation of CPCU (Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter). He was associated with the firm of E.D. English & Co. with his father Elmer D. and brother Robert E. English.
Roger raised his children in Kirkwood, MO., and after marrying Alice in 1969, they moved to the family farm, English Acres in Pacific, MO. They raised cattle, gardened, and entertained family members at events that became fondly known as Camp English. They continued to enjoy an active lifestyle after moving to Hot Springs, AR in 1989. They lived on a lake and enjoyed swimming, boating, and continuing the tradition of Camp English family reunions. In 2002, Roger and Alice moved back to St Louis and lived at The Gatesworth for 13 years. They maintained active lives and their tradition of hosting Camp English events for family members. He and Alice provided a strong sense of family traditions for their blended family.
Roger was an intelligent, reserved man of few words with a clever wit that delighted others when least expected. He was firm in his Christian faith and a life-long learner of the Bible. He loved English Acres, hosting Camp English events, fishing, horseback riding, gardening, swimming, golf and his quiet times. He offered practical and thoughtful advice as the head of his family. He was committed to mentoring the next generations, using his wisdom and genuine concern for the future.
A memorial service for both Roger and Alice will be held on February 6, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Ladue Chapel Presbyterian Church, 9450 Clayton Road, St. Louis MO 63124. A light luncheon will be served after the service. A private family interment will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery.
