Beatrice Wyllie

Beatrice Wyllie (nee Goldberg) passed away peacefully at her home on March 12, 2017.

Beatrice was born in Romania on November 4, 1931 to the late George and Sophie Goldberg. Her family moved to the United States when Beatrice was just 14 years old. They began their life in New York City, and later in life, after she had given birth to her daughter Robin, she moved to Kansas City to be near her brother Ernest. She ultimately moved to St. Louis to follow her career path. Beatrice retired from working at Washington University and Barnes Jewish Hospital where she had worked for many years as a billing and insurance specialist.

Beatrice was a Holocaust survivor. She was active in starting the 2nd and 3rd generation of the Holocaust Survivors group to continue the stories leftover from the elder generations. She volunteered her time sharing her experiences with others to educate them about the tragedies and victories that she had been through. She met and interacted with students of all ages, from all over the country, to tell them stories about her life and answer their questions.

She loved to travel and belonged to a travel club. She has traveled extensively throughout Europe, and visited China, Australia, Alaska, the Caribbean, South America and many other places. She also spent time teaching English to ESL students, both here and in New York. She became very close to some of her families, particularly the Zheng family-parents Max and Lucy, and their children Andy and Emma who became her “adopted” family.

She was a person who smiled easily and could make a friend out of anyone she met. She loved to talk to people, and meet new faces. Even into her last years she had joined a breakfast club and remained very active socially. She also loved babies and she volunteered at the nursery at the hospital and at many churches in the area around where she lived. If she saw a baby when she was out and about she would always stop to coo over it.

Most of all, she was a devoted mother and grandmother. She was proud to be able to help to raise her granddaughter, Danielle.

Beatrice is survived by her loving daughter Robin Wyllie and granddaughter Danielle Wyllie; her niece, Laura “Debbie” Samat, and nephew, Larry Goldberg. She was preceded in death by both parents, a childhood sibling and one brother Ernest Goldberg.

Services: A Memorial Celebration will be held for Beatrice on Sunday, May 7th, 2017 at 1:30 pm at the St. Louis Holocaust Museum, 12 Millstone Campus Drive, St. Louis, MO 63146. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Holocaust Museum appreciated.

Please leave memories and condolences below.
