Gwendolyn Mae (Davis) Huffines
Gwendolyn Mae (Davis) Huffines (January 21, 1926 – May 5, 2017)
Our Mom and Ma-ma passed into her Savior’s arms, May 5, 2017, after receiving 91 years of mercy and grace under God’s forgiving, loving care – gracious care for her and for us. The family and friends gather in memory of our lives together: Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, Bridgeton MO, May 27, 2-6 pm.
Everyone will remember her as half of “Gwen and Huffy.” Her husband and life partner, Hulton (Huffy), our Dad and Pa-pa, preceded her to heaven in 2011. Others who predeceased Gwen: father Ernest Davis, mother Mae (Gibson) Davis-Murphy, step father Clyde Pond Murphy, sisters Delores Stout, Willadean (Billie) Ecton, Genelda (Janie) Stephens, brother James Clyde Murphy, son William (Bill) Huffines, daughter Merideth (Wendy) Milner-Luttrell, granddaughter Laura Lynn Milner, son-in-law Larry Milner, and grandson David Huffines.
After WWII, Gwen and Huffy reared five children in the Christian faith: Warren, Regina, Wendy, Bill, and John – (Bill and Wendy predeceasing her). Our roots stem from Arkansas, Yellville and Big Flat. The family moved to Jerseyville and Delavan, Illinois. As Huffy worked a career with Hiram Walker’s, Gwen managed family finances with frugal diligence. She struggled to prepare hearty meals on a tight budget, patched clothes, and kept us kids working on chores in the house and each year’s large garden. Our parents allowed each of us to grow up as individuals. We have become the result of Mom and Dad’s calling under God to provide for us, their children.
Gwen and Huffy received the gift of faith in Jesus Christ by hearing God’s Good News proclaimed in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. They participated in His mission, founding the launch of mission churches in Jerseyville and Delavan, Illinois. God blessed us kids to be carried along as the Holy Spirit was at work, growing His Church through such earthly vessels as our parents.
All of Gwen’s children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren are grateful to God for the godly influence we received from Him through them both. To God alone be the glory and praise.
