Susan Lynn Bender

Susan L. Bender passed away on May 25, 2019 at her home in Brentwood, MO. She was born October 27, 1944 to Meredith Cain Jr. and Ruth B. Cain. She grew up in Iowa and after high school left to attend college at Central Missouri State. On a blind date on her would be husbands 21st birthday is where she met the man who would be the love of her life and partner for 53 years, Daniel Bender.

She was preceded in death by her sister Janelle Mary Lytle.

She is survived by her mother, Ruth B. Lytle (Bergren), husband of 53 years Daniel Bender, loving mother to son Charles Bender and daughter-in-law, Jackie Bender (Ehrhart), a daughter Janelle Baur (Bender) and son-in-law, Jay Baur, and son Jeffrey Bender, grandsons Charles Bender Jr. (CJ), Evan Bender, Nicholas Baur, Tyler Baur, and extended loving family and friends.

Susan retired from the Gateway PGA in March, 2019 after 22 years of employment. She enjoyed every minute of it and made wonderful friends. She truly felt blessed to be a part of the PGA family.

Susan was dedicated to her family and lived her life for us. We all knew it and were so lucky because of it. Her favorite past times were her grandsons sporting events, school functions, her infamous birthday dinners, trips to the zoo and to the park, going to see movies with her son Jeff, cooking with her husband and anything else that involved being with her family. Her loving spirit will be within us always.

As per her wishes, we will host a Celebration of Life ceremony on August 2, 2019 at her favorite spot which was the pond at Tilles Park. She spent so much time there with members of her family over the past 45 years. The time will be sent out at a later date. Donations can be made in her honor to The St. Louis Zoo. https://www.stlzoo.org/

So sorry to hear of Susan’s passing. I first met Susan when I was a teenager playing golf in Gateway PGA tournaments. I got to know her well in my early 20’s when I worked as an intern for the section and eventually as a PGA Member in the Section. Susan holds a special place in my heart as she is one of the kindest, most helpful people I ever met. She always had a smile on her face with a “happy to help” mentality and nice thing to say. The heavens will welcome Susan Bender with open arms and my condolences go out to her family. I’m blessed to have known Susan.

    Best Wishes.
    Brian
