Ernest Ross, Jr.
Ernest Ross, Jr., 79, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 10, 2019, in his home in University City, survived by is wife, Linda, and his saddened family. Ernest was born on August 20, 1939, in St. Louis, the first of two children of Ernest “Jack” Ross and Myrtle Cecelia (Monroe) Ross. His surviving siblings are Francis Lucille Saunders, Pauline Pettiford, Joyce Ross Moore, Cozette Ross and Lamont Ross. He was preceded in death by his sister Jacqueline Ross.
Ernest was Baptized at St Lukes Memorial Baptist Church in 1949. He married Angelena Auzenne in April 1961. In June 1999, he was wed to Linda Hancock. He was the father of five children, Ernest Hayes, Robin Ross (who preceded him in death), Felicia Ross, Kevin Ross, and Baron Ross, and he is the stepfather of Kristopher Burris and Paul Burris. He had 20 grandchildren, more than 20 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Ernest graduated from California’s Tustin Union High School in 1957, a star varsity athlete in three sports and student body president. He received is Associate of Arts degree in 1959 from Harris Stowe College and then his Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education in 1969. He served as a firefighter on the St. Louis Fire Department from 1961 to 1966, and as a sales representative and then major distribution manager at Oscar Mayer Food Corporation until his retirement after 30 years in the food industry. Ernest then returned to education, working in the Jennings School District as a grant writer, student investment coach, and attendance marshal, and he also led the district’s technology development effort until he again retired after five years of service.
Friends and family of Ernie Ross will gather to celebrate his life in a public service at 11:00 a.m. on September 14, 2019, at the Highlands Clubhouse in Forest Park in St. Louis.

Ernie was a very special person. I worked with Ernie in St Louis…should say…I learned valuable lessons in life and professionalism from him at Oscar Mayer. I helped him try golf when we were in Davenport, IA working for Oscar Mayer. After moving to many locations in the US and returning to St Louis after a 30 year absence, I was hoping to locate Ernie and reconnect. I am so sorry to have missed that opportunity. Karl Gnau
I hope Ernie’s family sees this, because he was influential in my life. Ernie was my boss at Oscar Mayer in St. Louis for 3.5 years. He is easily the best boss I ever had in my life. He took time to teach me things in my 20s that I needed to learn. I will always remember Ernie fondly. Even when he needed to correct me in my work or the way I presented myself, I never felt looked down on or belittled. Our lives took us both in different directions, and I am a pastor now. Ernie has made it into a few of my sermons over the years! I look forward to seeing him in heaven someday. Jerry Bush
