Julia Grace Carr, née Steck
1924 – 2020
Julia: Daughter, Sister, Wife, Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma, Aunt, Cousin, Friend
On Wednesday, March 18, Julia passed away at the age of 95 following a brief illness.
It is amazing to think of all the changes in the world that she saw over the course of her long and full life. She witnessed historic world events, new inventions and technology. She left her home and moved across the country and then back again years later. She dealt with her physical challenges as they came. Whatever the change, she adapted as needed and without complaint.
Her childhood was partially shaped by having two deaf parents and growing up during the Great Depression. During World War II, she proudly served as a member of the United States Naval Women’s Reserve (known as the WAVES) and one can only imagine what it must have been like for her to go and work in Washington D.C. after growing up in the small, rural town of Benton, MO. Julia discovered a lifelong love of reading as a young child and also enjoyed music, cooking and Scrabble.
She mastered email when she was in her 80’s. Watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune on TV gave her many years of entertainment and later in life she became a die-hard Cardinals baseball fan.
Julia truly enjoyed people. She worked for Dillard’s for many years and liked helping customers shop for “China, Silver and Gifts”. She was at her happiest though, when family and friends gathered together. She made everyone feel welcome in her home and loved to share a homemade meal and conversation.
The family finds peace in believing that Julia and Bill, her husband of 64 years who died in 2015, are together once again.
Even though we are filled with sadness at our loss, when we take a moment to quiet our thoughts and let our hearts be still, we can feel Julia’s love and acceptance surround us. As it did in life, that love brings us comfort.
Julia, we hear you singing. Enjoy your walks In The Garden.
Mindy & Jim, Did not know Julia but I feel I do now a bit better! Love
