Carmen Anthony Notaro
Dr. Carmen Anthony Notaro, a resident of Bridgeton, MO, passed away at home on January 25, 2021 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 79 years old. He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Joanne (nee Grieff) Notaro; his son, Paul Carmen Notaro; his grandson, Paul Marshall Notaro; his daughter-in-law Sheri (nee Wynn) Notaro; his sister-in-law, Dianna (nee Genuso) Notaro; eight loving nephews; one aunt, Rose Arnone; and a host of devoted cousins. Carmen is preceded in death by his parents Thomas A. Notaro and Rose F. (nee Trimboli) Notaro and his brother, Hon. Peter J. Notaro.
After graduating from Bishop Fallon High School in 1958, Carmen went on to earn a BA, cum laude, from Canisius College in 1962 and a doctorate degree in history from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1969. As a result of his studies, he published articles about Presidents Lincoln, Jackson, and Polk in various academic journals.
After he completed his doctoral degree, Carmen worked for over 23 years at Hilbert College in Hamburg, NY, where he ultimately served as Executive Vice President. Carmen and his family then moved to Shawnee, Oklahoma where he served as the President of St. Gregory’s College for five years. After concluding his service to St. Gregory’s College, Carmen continued to enjoy a long career in higher education administration, college teaching, and fund-raising at Rose State College, Seminole State College, and the Jasmine Moran Children’s Museum.
After retiring in 2007, Carmen and Joanne moved to St. Louis, MO to be closer to their son, daughter-in-law, and grandson. Carmen and Joanne enjoyed traveling, antiquing, bird-watching, and celebrating holidays with their family.
The family will hold a private funeral. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial donation in Carmen’s honor to the Jasmine Moran Children’s Museum in Seminole, Oklahoma (sent to the attention of Marci Donaho, P.O. Box 1828, Seminole, OK 74818-1828).

I am so sorry. Carmen was one of my all time favorite people. His love of life and his love for you was amazing. I enjoyed our outings to explore new restaurants. Both of you were a pleasant asset to any party. Rest In Peace Carmen.

I was so saddened to hear of Carmen’s passing. He was a very special cousin to me. Our relationship was unique in that we were not only 1st cousins (on my mother’s side)—but 3rd cousins (on my father’s side)! But, most importantly, our relationship was special because of the childhood we shared with cousins and friends and aunts and uncles. The brick house on Trenton Avenue was always filled with love and laughter. Memories of Uncle Tom and Aunt Rosie sitting at the kitchen table while we played games in the family room (with Carmen always taking on the role of “teacher”—go figure!) Carmen will always hold a special place in my childhood memories; and when I think of him, I will always remember his unique way of making everyone feel special. And I am so blessed to have been one of those people.

Carmen left a legacy of caring at Hilbert College. His competency as a fund-raiser was strengthened by relationships based on trust. Those early funds provided the basis for Hilbert’s financial survival. Many of the endowments that he obtained remain among the largest in Hilbert’s history. He was a Christian, a Gentlemen, and a professional. A life well-lived. Condolences to Joanne and the family.
