Michael G. Belton, Sr.

Michael G. Belton, Sr. was born on August 16, 1949, in East St. Louis, Illinois to the late Eddie Belton and the late Rosemary (Belton) Pennington. He was the oldest of two.Michael was preceded in death by his mother, Rosemary Pennington, his father, Eddie Belton, his sister, Linda Trigg and his nephew, Dentry Thomas.

Michael was affectionately known by many names, Mike, Big Mike, Uncle Mike, Cuz, and Dad. Michael also held many titles, Son, Brother, Uncle, Friend, Counselor, Deacon and Family Historian.

His greatest title and the one he was most proud of was that of Father. Not only was he a father to his own children, but he was also a father to his late sister’s (Linda Trigg) children as well.

Michael never met a stranger.  His genuine love for others was represented everywhere he went. Michael was VERY CHARISMATIC (wink-wink). He had an infectious smile that lit up a room. Whether he was sharing a bible scripture, relationship advice, our family’s history or his lottery numbers, Michael lived in the moment and would take you along for the ride.

Michael attended O’Fallon Technical High School and joined and served the US Army in the late 1960’s. After the military, Michael became the proud father of a baby girl, Kim Howse in 1967 and his namesake, Michael G. Belton, Jr. in 1982.

Michael was employed by the Missouri Department of Transportation working on many of the highways we travel on today. He retired from MODOT after many years of dedicated service. Michael had a hustler’s mentality which led to many entrepreneurial endeavors. Michael often enjoyed many side jobs including working as a fence installation consultant/contractor. As quiet as it’s kept, Michael enjoyed a career as an out-of-state distillery distributor.

Michael enjoyed spending quality time with friends and family.  He loved attending family functions and “the Ally gang”. He enjoyed taking pride in each of his prized trucks. The most notable was his gray Chevy affectionately named. “BMF”.

Michael joined Clayton Missionary Baptist Church in August 1997 and was ordained as a Deacon in February 2003.  He served for many years as the most loyal and dedicated Deacon. He would be the first one to open the doors and the last one to leave and close the doors. He did countless volunteer work for the church. Michael often assisted with the maintenance, repairs and upkeep around the church.

If anyone ever had a need for a service or a repair – Mike – “Knew a Guy”.

Michael leaves to cherish his memory: his children Kim Howse (Floyd) Moore, Michael (Candace) Belton, Jr., his niece and nephews Dana (Nikki) (Gustova) Henton, Delbert (Lamarr) Belton and Derrick (Chip) Karen Belton.

Grandchildren: Gerald Howse, Jr. and Keyairra Howse

Life-long friends: Marion (Coop) Cooper and Lester (Baby Brother) Sheers

And a host of beloved first cousins, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and Special Friends.

I’m so saddened to hear of the news of Mr. Belton’s transition from earth to glory, but I rejoice that he is resting with our savior. I knew Mr. Belton from Lackland Plaza Apartments, when I worked there as the manager. He was one of the nicest, most caring, comical, and genuine people I knew. When I left we kept in touch, but time has a way from getting away from most of us, and I hadn’t recently connected with him. But I would like his beloved son and family to know that your dad was a tremendous man, that affected so many peoples lives in such a positive way.
