Ralph Eisenschiml

Eisenschiml, Ralph, 86 of Chesterfield, MO passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on July 25, 2009 after a brief illness. Born and raised in Chicago, he was a long-time resident of Highland Park, IL. Ralph was a veteran of World War II serving on the Pacific front as a signal corpsman. At the age of 23, he was aboard the USS Teton, the first allied ship to sail into Tokyo Bay prior to the formal Japanese surrender. After the war, he met Carol Kahn and the two were married in 1948. They had three daughters, Laurel, Nancy (Mike Taterka), and Betsy (Paul Wachowiak). Ralph began his career in the chemical industry and later worked in commodity futures. His interests and talents were many and varied. A self-taught musician, Ralph mastered the piano, violin, clarinet, and oboe. He enjoyed playing with the Evanston Symphony, the Roosevelt College Symphony, and various chamber music ensembles. His experiences in the war left him with a love of ham radio, codes, and logic puzzles. He also had a life-long fascination with mathematics and physics. After retirement, he enjoyed volunteering as an English tutor for doctoral students at Washington University. An avid hippo enthusiast, his collection of hippopotamus images delighted his grandchildren: David, Julia, Annie (Tony Cole), Emily, and Jonathan. He is also survived and will be missed by friend and brother-in-law, Morley Kahn and his wife, Yvette as well as many nieces and nephews.
