Agnes “Missy” Potter Chouteau
December 12th, 1929 – September 12th, 2025

Agnes “Missy” Potter Chouteau passed away peacefully on September 12th, 2025,
leaving behind a legacy of gentleness, creativity, and a life deeply attuned to the natural
world.
Born on December 12th, 1929, in St. Louis, Missouri, Missy brought light and grace to
everyone who knew her. She was the beloved wife of the late Pierre Phillipe Chouteau,
and a devoted mother to Jane Clark Chouteau (Robert) and Marie Chouteau Mathes
(Jeff); and grandmother to Bennett Krack (Lindsey) and Lily (Rowan) Chouteau. She is
preceded in death by her children Rene Auguste Chouteau (Donna) and Peter
Chouteau.
Missy was the heart of her family and the soul of every gathering—often found quietly
removing all the black licorice jelly beans from the Easter baskets.
A gifted sculptor, Missy studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where
her talent took root and blossomed. Her art was a reflection of her spirit—she found her
greatest inspiration outdoors, whether at her cherished summer cottage in Arcadia
Valley or on her many birding adventures.
An avid birder and long-time member of the Webster Groves Nature Society, she and
her husband Pete traveled widely in their VW bus, especially enjoying winters spent
birdwatching in Mexico. Her love for nature and wildlife was surpassed only by her deep
curiosity and thirst for history.
A passionate historian and past President of the National Society of Colonial Dames,
Missy was honored to accept an award on the Society’s behalf at the White House,
where she met President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush. She took pride in
her lineage as a descendant of both René Auguste Chouteau and Captain William
Clark—heritage that she carried with dignity and purpose.
Missy lived a life of beauty, humor, and gentle strength. She will be deeply missed by
her family, friends, and the many communities she touched with her quiet wisdom and
generous spirit.
A memorial service will be held from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday November 1st , 2025, at
Saint Louis Cremation, 2135 Chouteau Avenue, Saint Louis, MO 63103.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Webster Groves Nature
Study Society in Missy’s memory:
