Alan Hood

Alan A’dale Hood passed away at a St. Louis Missouri hospital due to septic shock with kidney & lung failure on February 12th, 2026.

Born Sept 12, 1950 in Fort Belvoir, VA. to Robin & Anna (Roper) Hood. Alan was the first born of 4 boys: Alan A’dale, Robin Jr, William (Bill), and John Harrison.

He was preceded in death by his mother, father & youngest brother, John. Those left to cherish the memory of Alan are his daughter Brooke (Hood) Dennis and her husband Nick, 2 grand kids Bay (17), Powell (10), cousins, aunts, uncles & lifelong friends.

Alan grew up in Southern California where he attended school in Granada Hills and worked for Alpha Beta. He married is first wife, Diane.

He moved to Northern California where he worked for Raley’s in both Auburn & Grass Valley. Married his second wife, Molly and had his daughter in ‘81. The Sierras were his home for 13 years.

Alan moved back to SoCal and returned to college to finish degrees in Fine Arts, Multimedia Arts & Computer Science at Los Angeles Mission College. During this time, Alan also briefly lived in Hamilton, MT. and Boone, IA.

On returning back to SoCal, he “married” his third wife, Bonnie. Together they moved to Asheville, NC., traveled the world and called the Smokies home for 15 years.

In 2023, Alan moved near his daughter & family in DeSoto, MO.

Alan had a wicked artistic ability, an ear for music, and always came with a bag of parlor tricks. Despite his stories sounding surreal, many friends can attest to the wild white water rafting, sailing, skiing & mountain biking he did throughout his life. He loved to cook, take pictures, and take the long way home.

Having known your Dad for over 50 years we were so very close and as life happens we became and lost touch for awhile. We reconnected during Covid and then stayed in touch. It was wonderful reminiscing and laughing over our lives. I will miss him so much. He was a great friend and a good man.

Your Dad and I go back over 50 years. He was a great friend and a good man. Although we lost touch for a time we reconnected in the last few years and were able to laugh about our lives till our sides hurt and had stayed in touch. I will miss him terribly. My love to you and your family.

I’ve known Alan since the 70’s. What a funny and witty guy. I can still hear his laugh. He used his artistic talent to help me with a school project. We lost touch for awhile after he moved out of California. His pictures from his travels were amazing. Rest in peace Al.💕🙏🏻

I am most familiar with the elder cousins in our family. Cousin Alan and I were the same age; I was born just a year and three weeks earlier. Having a cousin of the same age die, someone I’m familiar with, someone like me, with talents and deficits, with both good qualities and human failings, is like seeing a part of myself.

Like everyone who knew Alan, I will remember his talents and good qualities, and if he made errors and had shortcomings, I’m still among the living and have no reason not to be more caring towards those that I love, with relatives and neighbors, with strangers, even with those I dislike.

Rest well, Cousin Alan. My time will come too, and I’ll see you on the other side. Cousin Dan

Cousin Alan Hood was the consummate outdoorsman, sharing his love/profound passion for nature with his daughter, Brooke. How well I remember the Doyle/Hood/Roper family camping trip(s) to the Kern River in our adolescent years; Alan brought much joy to his dad, Robin Hood, with their travels/camping excursions in PopPop’s red Hummer with the bobble-head moose Alan mounted on the dash.

Alan was a whiz with computer technology, and he was instrumental in my fledgling computer literacy/skills. When his dad decided it was time for me to possess a computer, Alan did the research and selected the laptop for me to purchase, making sure it would surpass my needs as an educator. Over the years, he printed my wedding invitations, transferred my beloved “Frog and Toad Are Friends” VHS tape to a CD, as well as a San Disk Chip, so technology could continue to provide for enjoyment of our characters’ adventures, AND he shared an 8×10″ photo of a reindeer, in which he had worked his magic to give “Rudolph” his red, glowing nose. (This gift was originally sent to his niece, Rachel Ann, his brother, John’s, daughter, with a “Letter From Santa,” removing all doubt as to whether or not the jolly old elf was real.) He shared them with me, also, and they were “delivered” to my classroom for many, many years, to my students’ delight.

Alan was a wonderful cook, as well. I fondly remember his grillmaster skill – the delicious steaks he would tend to on his dad’s barbecue. I believe he had a hand in the making of the traditional Christmas Eve dinner that his mom, Anna Hood, had taught him to cook, and would coach him on, from her place at the kitchen table – Old Fashioned Goulash, with lime jello/mustard sauce on the side. In Anna’s later years, Alan would prepare the recipes for his mom; after she passed, he continued the tradition before he ventured east with Bonnie to North Carolina.

I hadn’t seen Alan since he departed California; facebook became invaluable for staying in touch with his adventures. He would share exquisite photos of his travels abroad; he was as much as master of the camera as he was the computer. He would also share photos of Brooke, her family, and their adventures together. He provided/shared so many experiences to/with the Dennis Family, and enjoyed being grandfather to Bay and Powell.

I am so glad Alan ultimately made his way to Missouri, and was able to spend his remaining years with Brooke, Nick, Bay, and Powell, who cared for him, bringing him much joy and love, during the final season of his Earthly life. Godspeed, Cousin Alan. You are loved and missed by many. See you later, in a little while.
