Anthony Joseph Asaro

February 11th, 1930 — January 20th, 2026

With heavy hearts and deep love, we announce the passing of Anthony J. Asaro on January 20, 2026, fortified withthe Sacraments of Holy Mother Church, just short of his 96th birthday. For the past three years, Anthony courageously faced several health challenges, including Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS). He is now at peace, reunited in eternity with the loved ones who preceded him.

Anthony was born to Leonardo and Rosina (Villafranca) Asaro, who immigrated to the United States from Mazara del Vallo, Sicily. He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings Antonia (Lena) Giacalone, Francesco (Frank), and Giuseppa (Josephine) Lenihan; many beloved in-laws, aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was also preceded in death by his former wife, Joaquina (Armengol) Whitaker.

Anthony is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Mary (Kanne) Asaro, and his children: Leo Asaro (Kris), John Asaro (Ellen), Leslie Brandtjen (Brett), Annette Vohs (Todd), and Kelly Kress (Corey). He was a proud and loving grandfather to Alexandra Fikas (Giannis), Vanessa Schaller (Travis), Matthew Brandtjen, Kyle Brandtjen, Elizabeth Kress, Danica Vohs, Josephine Kress, and Theodore Kress, and a cherished great-grandfather to Daphne and Zoe Fikas and Walter Schaller. Anthony was also a beloved brother-in-law, uncle, great-uncle, cousin, friend, and neighbor.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude for the countless prayers, kind words, and support offered on Anthony’s behalf. Special thanks to the dedicated nurses and staff of the VA Home-Based Primary Care Team 1, Home Hospice Nurse Lucinda, his final caregiver Sharonda of All Family Care, and the SSM/SLU Hospital Cancer Center, particularly Maureen and the Apheresis Center staff, whose care helped keep Anthony with us as long as possible.

Anthony was a proud Korean War veteran, had a lifelong passion for fine vehicles, and was deeply passionate about the food and traditions of his Sicilian heritage. He had a talent for fixing nearly anything, and in his later years discovered painting as a creative hobby. His legacy lives on through his family and the many lives he touched. He will always be remembered and deeply missed.

Anthony will be laid to rest on his 96th birthday, February 11, 2026, with military honors at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery at 1:30pm, a final tribute befitting his honorable service to his country. Friends and family wishing to extend their condolences and memories, are welcome to join the family at Andre’s South, 5254 Telegraph Road, St. Louis, MO 63129, 3pm – 7pm. for an open house style Celebration of Life.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances and contributions in Anthony’s name may be made to MDS-Foundation (MDSFoundation.org) or Service Dogs For Vets (SD4V.org).

We will always cherish our dinners, trips, and other gatherings with Tony. His stories were entertaining, his listening heartfelt, his smile so contagious, and his love for Mary so very cute!
May he rest in peace while we still see him smiling and toasting us!
