Betty Singleton

Betty A. Singleton was born in Ashtabula, Ohio on October 22, 1938 and went to heaven to be with our Lord on Saturday, May 9, 2020 while at home surrounded by her family and others who loved her. She was preceded in death by her parents Albert and Doris Schmelzer and her husband Ronald Singleton. In the early 40’s her family moved from Ohio to Lake Station (previously East Gary), Indiana where she grew up, graduated from Edison High School, and got married in 1958. During her marriage, she and her family lived in the Midwest towns of Indianapolis, Indiana; Saginaw, Michigan; Merrillville, Indiana; and then finally in Hanover Park, Illinois where she resided until moving to the Saint Louis area in 2017. She worked for Poplar Creek Library in Streamwood, IL from 1979 to 2009 when she retired. Betty is survived by 3 children: Cynthia (Edward) Aderman of Lake St. Louis, MO; Leslie (Sara) Singleton of Moore, SC; and Carolyn Cynowa of South Elgin, IL. She has 6 grandchildren Thomas (Samantha) Aderman, Kathryn Aderman, Brian (Samantha) Singleton, Staci Singleton, Andrew Singleton, and Tabitha Cynowa and 4 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Harold (Rosemarie) Schmelzer of Portage, IN and sister Deborah (Mike) Skarja. Betty loved reading books, collecting antiques, and playing bingo with friends at the senior center. Betty was well loved by many and a friend to all. Because she believed that reading and books are an important part of a child’s life, in lieu of flowers please make donations to her favorite charity, Ready Readers of St. Louis.
