Bonnie L. (Pestotnik) Schmickley

September 5, 1938-September 22, 2013

Bonnie L. (Pestotnik) Schmickley passed away Sunday, September 22, 2013, in the arms of her children and their spouses, following a brief illness at St JosephHospital in St Charles, Missouri.

 

Bonnie was the eldest daughter of J. Boyd and Joyce E. (Breedlove) Pestotnik. She grew up in Boone, Iowa, graduating from BooneHigh School in 1956.

 

Bonnie received her Baccalaureate in Medical Technology from The University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa, in 1960. She worked as a Medical Technologist, specializing in microbiology, at BooneHospital in Boone, Iowa, DePaulHospital in St Louis, Missouri, and St JosephHospital in St Charles, Missouri. At the time of her death, she was retired.

 

In 1960, Bonnie married Dennis L. Schmickley. They had 3 children, Pat, Peg, and John, prior to amicably divorcing in 1972.

 

Bonnie spent her retirement in St Charles, Missouri. She was accomplished in needlework, knitting, and crochet, and spent many hours each day creating blankets and afghans to be donated to the elderly and to infants in need.

 

Bonnie was proud of her family and enjoyed spending time with her sisters, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

 

Bonnie leaves behind her children:

Son, Patrick and daughter-in-law Gina (Mormino) Schmickley of Florissant, MO, and their children, Hannah and Lauren;

Daughter, Peggy and son-in-law Tim Capps of Washington, MO, and their children, Andrew Schmickley, Sarah, Daniel, Helen, Olivia, and Samuel;

Son, John and daughter-in-law Jeannine (Chase) Schmickley of Eureka, MO, and their children, Renee, Natalie, and Jessica (Papp) of Granite City, IL, and her children, Nevaeh, Aubrey, and Jackson.

Bonnie is survived by her sisters, Sue (and Rollie) Schafer of Denton, Texas, and Jo Anne (and David) Howell of Boone, Iowa, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

 

Bonnie was a woman of intelligence, talent, strength, integrity, and courage, and possessed a wonderful sense of humor. She was a treasure (she would have said “a keeper.”). Her family and friends will miss her.

 

Visitation will be held on Monday, October 7, 2013, from 5:30-7 pm, followed by a memorial service at 7 pm, at New Hope Presbyterian Church, 1580 Kisker Rd, St Charles, MO, where Bonnie was a member.

 

Bonnie will be laid to rest alongside her parents in LinwoodParkCemetery in Boone, Iowa, on Saturday, October 19, 2013. A memorial service will be held at the FirstBaptistChurch in Boone at 11 am, with visitation from 10-11 am.

 

The family asks that any memorials should be directed to: St. Louis Children’s Hospital Camp Rhythm (for children with congenital heart defects and heart disease) www.stlouischildrens.org/our-services/heart-center/camp-rhythm ; Boone Municipal Band (Boone, Iowa); or Scholl Memorial Scholarship Fund (for band camp) (Boone, Iowa).

    Thank you for all the wonderful support from family and friends during this time. Bonnie was a great mom to John, a great mother in law to me as well as a friend, and a wonderful grandma to Renee and Natalie. I will miss her and her wit.
