Carl H. Barthold

March 4, 1923 – March 21, 2021

 

Carl Barthold passed away peacefully, on March 21st, 2021, after a brief illness. He was 98 years old.

He was the second of three children to Joseph and Katherine Barthold. Carl attended St. Louis Public Schools and graduated from Soldan High School in January, 1941.

He started college at Washington University that Fall. As with many of his generation, World War II disrupted his plans.

Carl enlisted in the Army Air Corps Cadet Program in December, 1942. He was called to active duty in February, 1943. He attended radio school, code school, and B-29 Bomber training.

He was stationed on Saipan from October, 1944 to July, 1945, where he participated in dozens of missions including the first B-29 raid on Tokyo on Thanksgiving Day 1944.

He completed 32 combat missions. Carl was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with Silver Oak Leaf Cluster.

 

He was discharged in October of 1945. He returned to St. Louis and resumed his studies at Washington University, graduating in June of 1948 with a degree in Business Administration.

Carl married Nancy Faye Davis at the First Presbyterian Church of St. Louis on June 6, 1947. They have 3 sons and 3 grandchildren. He worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone and AT&T in the Comptrollers Office for 37 years before retiring in1985.

Carl became involved with Scouting as a youth and served as a Cubmaster in St. Louis, and an Assistant Scout Master in New Jersey. He became a Scoutmaster (Troop 630) and Explorer Advisor in St. Louis and guided all 3 sons to Eagle Scout. He took 2 groups of boys on expeditions through the mountains of Philmont Scout in New Mexico and another group on a canoeing adventure in northern Wisconsin. The BSA-Greater St. Louis Council awarded him the Silver Beaver Award for his work in Scouting in 1974.

He became a member of the First Presbyterian Church and became a Deacon before moving to Texas. When Carl and Nancy returned to St. Louis they joined Bonhomme Presbyterian Church in Chesterfield in 1965. Carl and Nancy supported the St. Louis Symphony, Missouri Botanical Garden, Forest Park Forever, the St. Louis Zoo, Missouri History Museum, and the St. Louis Art Museum. Carl joined the Masons after returning from the war. He was accepted to Erwin Lodge and later Tuscan Lodge. He was a Past Master for both lodges. He earned a 50 Year Masonic Pin in 1999. In 2019, the Grand Lodge of Missouri honored him with a 70 Year Award. He belonged to the Scottish Rite, the Moolah Shrine Temple and The High Twelve. He also enjoyed bowling, golf, and travel, and participated in several WWII Veteran organizations.

Carl is survived by his wife of 73 years, Nancy, and his sons, Charles (Manuel), Thomas (Laurie) and Brian (Jana). He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Faye (Mike) Morrone, Ross (Kelly) Barthold, and Meredith Barthold (Cameron Ario), his sister, Lorraine Moriarity, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Ernst Barthold.

Carl had many treasured friendships throughout his life, especially within the Masons and Shriners organizations.

He was loved by many and will be deeply missed.

    I just received my copy of the Washington U magazine and saw the notice of Carl’s passing. I just want to say that I knew Carl in the mid 30’s when we were neighbors on Eastern Avenue. His father was our barber. May the family be comforted
