Carolyn Sue Frederick Mayfield
Carolyn Sue Frederick Mayfield passed away peacefully on August 5, 2025 after a multi-year struggle with dementia. She is survived by husband Mark, daughters Nicole and Natalie, son-in-law David Dreyfus, and grandsons Jonah and Ari.
In addition, she is survived by siblings Leona Murray, Leon Frederick, Gloria Kettmann, Vesta Bade and David Frederick; first cousins Betty Reynolds, Retha Hansen, and Rhonda Turner; many brothers and sisters-in-law; several nieces and nephews; and countless great friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Pete and Susie Frederick, and her brother, Ben Frederick.
Carolyn and Mark met on 14th St. in St. Louis in the summer of 1966 and married in 1968 after her high school graduation from Central High School. During the course of their marriage, they lived in Centralia and Chicago, IL; St. Louis, MO, Louisville, KY, Franklin, TN, Lee’s Summit, MO and Paducah, KY, with an eventual return to St. Louis in 2013 at retirement.
Carolyn was a stunningly beautiful girl who, in her later years, was appreciated for her white hair. Mark and Carolyn had a great group of friends who went on several cruises together over the years, including a trans-Atlantic cruise to Europe (she kissed the Blarney Stone in Ireland) and another cruise to the Mediterranean. Carolyn loved the “dress-up” formal dinner nights where she could wear her sparkly dresses and jewelry.
Carolyn was greatly appreciated for her skills and passions: baking, sewing, crafting, painting, beach towel appliqué gifts to the family children, Derby pies for the Kentucky Derby, Parker House rolls at Thanksgiving, and strawberry daiquiri-making in the summer. She worked for over a decade as a Mary Kay representative.
She will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
I was always referred to as the sister-cousin. Carolyn was more of a sister than a cousin. From jr high through high school Carolyn spent summers in Piggott with me. It was a wonderful treat for both of us. After marriage and kids we still visited back and forth from Piggott to St Louis. I think that even Mark began to look forward to Piggott visits. Will always cherish the memories we all made togethe. ❤️
Carolyn was the Best Sister a girl could have. She was always there when I needed help. She was the kindest and most thoughtful person I ever knew. We spent many hours on the phone discussing everything including her favorite topic – politics! She always said I was the one with all the talent, but she was wrong; she did beautiful applique work (which I could never do), painting, crafts of all sorts, cooking and entertaining. Carolyn could learn anything she set her mind to, even her computer. She was a perfect hostess to all of our wonderful Mother’s Day weekends at her house. Carolyn was beautiful inside and out, if she had any flaws I sure didn’t know of them. I will always love her and miss her.
Our precious sister Carolyn has gone to be with Mom, Dad, Ben and many other loved ones, but we here will miss her forever. She was so blessed to have her husband Mark that has loved her since the day they met . If you have ever seen the movie “NOTEBOOK” you will know the kind of marriage they had. This movie could have been written about them . I’ll always treasure our times together, holidays, vacations, and of course our Mother’s Day weekends . I just want to cry, knowing it will not see her again until we meet in heaven. Love you my sweet sister with all my heart .
Oh where to begin? So many wonderful memories of Aunt Carolyn!
Holidays (baking Christmas cookies), vacations (KY Lake), visiting the Mayfields at the CarMar- in whatever city they were in at the time, Carolyn was always the best hostess with her famous strawberry daiquiris!
We share a love for lavender and hummingbirds, which will always be a Beautiful reminder of my Aunt Carolyn.
She is now at peace and will be dearly missed.
Prayers for Uncle Mark, Natalie, and Nicole
Carolyn was such a special person and friend – beautiful inside and out – and a laugh that was so joyous and infectious. So many good memories of the years she lived in Louisville, and I’m lucky to have known her and shared that friendship. Deep sympathy to Mark, Natalie and Nicole, and to the family and friends who will miss her.
Carolyn was a kind and caring person. She took me under her wing when we were transferred to St. Louis from Chicago introducing me to the area and becoming a dear friend. Well before she learned to appliqué, I remember the beautiful embroidery she did, especially the handwork she did on a denim jacket. Another fond memory was the two of us attending a Phil Donahue show that was held on location in St. Louis and how Carolyn caught the eye of a cameraman who approached to comment on her beauty. In her later years, we bonded and commiserated over our shared political views.
My deepest condolences go to Mark, Nicole, and Natalie and all the family members who will miss her.
This remembrance brought back so many memories of living next door to Mark and Carolyn in Louisville. She made beach towel for my twin boys and baked a special cake for every birthday. Carolyn Mark and their niece Heather helped us raise the boys and became family to us with their two daughters Nicole and Natalie. Our son Clay still says a prayer for Aunt Carolyn and Uncle Mark each night. What a gem Carolyn is. She will be deeply missed.
I love you Aunt Carolyn. My life won’t be the same without you. 💔 I have the most wonderful memories with you. I’m crying posting this. My Uncle Mark took care of my Aunt everyday until the end. Love you both so much. 💓
I can’t think of a more dedicated couple that I ever knew. Fun to be around, hospitable and so full of love. Our condolences to Mark, Nicole, Natalie and all the family on your loss. May the peace of God fill you all in knowing the kind and loving wife and mother that Carolyn was. A friend to everyone and a giver to every need. Rest in peace Carolyn.
In our thoughts and prayers,

Carolyn was a special lady who was my neighbor for several years at Countryside Subdivision . Carolyn ,and Mark were the most perfect neighbors that anyone could possibly ever have. I will always remember Carolyn at Panera Bread having chicken noodle soup ,and my two granddaughter’s who were with me wanted the same meal Carolyn had . Carolyn and Mark were truly the shining stars of that Subdivision. They will always be missed ,and never ever forgotten. Thoughts ,and prayers go out to the Mayfield family, Mike ,and Barbara Peppers
Carolyn is my sister. I remember when my mother was expecting and she asked me whether I wanted a sister or a brother. I already had two brothers so I told her I wanted a sister. Carolyn was born at night (at home) and an aunt of ours came in and woke me up and told me I had the sister I wanted. I was so excited I ran to the bedroom where my mother was and she let me sit on the bed and hold my new sister.
As a child Carolyn always came to me to do things for her that she could not do for herself. I was five years old when she was born so I always helped her dress, take baths, etc. She was a quiet child and her feelings could easily be hurt and she would cry.
She was a very pretty little girl and grew up to be a beautiful woman.
She always kept her house very clean and she knew how to decorate so her home always looked like pictures in magazines.
I loved her very much and will miss her until I see her again in heaven. I know she is having a great reunion in heaven with all of her loved ones who have gone on before her. Those loved ones include her grandparents on both sides of the family, her brother Ben, parents Pete and Susie Frederick. Rest in peace my dear sister.
I have always admired that my talented Aunt Carolyn decorated her homes with all the wonderful handmade crafts she created over the decades. Women don’t seem to do that anymore. Her tole paintings, embroidery, and cross-stitched arts hung on her walls and decorated her shelves. They helped her turn the many different houses she lived in, into warm and familiar homes. They’re such treasured keepsakes to remember her by. She’ll always be in my thoughts whenever I embroider or tole paint. The few creations she made for me, I will deeply treasure. Prayers to my Uncle Mark, Nicole, Natalie, and Natalie’s sons on the loss of such a talented and beautiful woman.
I was 8 years old when Mark and Carolyn got together. Carolyn was a part of my life for a long time. She was an awesome sisterinlaw, great host for family get togethers-so many over the years. Great memories. Condolences to the entire Frederick family.
