Charles Stuart Mooney of Manchester, Missouri, passed away at age 94 on September 29, 2023.
Charles (Charlie) was born July 17, 1929, in Springfield, Missouri to Charles Harrison Mooney and Vesta Marie (Stuart) Mooney. He was the youngest of three siblings. He spent most of his early years in the Springfield area where he met the love of his life.
On June 16, 1949, he married Katie Mae Hall in Springfield, Missouri. Together they had four children: Chuck Stuart, Becky Kay, Jeffrey Kevin (Jeff), and Kelly Michael. He and Katie celebrated 74 wonderful years of marriage before his passing.
Charlie was…
- a US Border Patrol Officer
- a lineman, repeaterman, and supervisor/manager at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company… from where he retired after a long career
- an Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts
- a Sea Scout
- in the Navy Reserve
- a Golden Gloves Boxer (regional champion)
- a brown belt in judo
- a master in multiple firearms
- able to earn his bachelor’s degree while working full-time
- left handed
- a ham radio operator who was also proficient at Morse Code
- an avid community volunteer, including sandbagging during floods, helping supply computers to inner-city schools, and educating adults on computer utilization
Charlie also…
- enjoyed sailing & canoeing
- knew computers inside & out
- spoke fluent Spanish
- served in Police Reserves
- donated over 16 gallons of blood through the Red Cross
- lived in Tehran, Iran in 78-79 during the protests and demonstrations, while working for American Bell International.
Charlie left us with a lot of wisdom, sound bites, silly songs & non sequiturs through the years, and we remember every single one…. and often quote them.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Shirley, his brother Jack, and his son Chuck.
He is survived by his wife Katie, daughter Becky and husband Jeff Link, son Jeff and wife Susan (Brenyas), son Kelly, eight grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.
Charlie’s light-hearted nature and genuinely loving soul will be dearly missed by his family, as well as by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He is LOVED!
