David Heigel

David Heigel of Winchester, MO, transitioned from this life after a prolonged illness, on January 4,2026, at St Luke’s Hospital, surrounded by his family.

His parents, Warren and Diane Heigel, preceded him in death. David is survived by his children, Ashley Heigel of Winchester, MO and Conrad (Dawn) Heigel of Arnold, MO; four grandchildren, Gabriella Sanchez Heigel of Winchester, MO; Morgan Heigel, Taylor Heigel, and Liam Heigel of Arnold, MO; his brother Brian (Sue) Heigel of Wildwood, MO; his sister, Stephanie Heigel Tibbitts of Jackson Hole, WY; two uncles, Tom Kilcullen of Warson Woods, MO and Wayne Heigel of Lenexa, KS; two aunts, Jan Kilcullen of Warson Woods, MO and Katie Kilcullen of Denver. CO; and many cousins, nieces, great nephews, and one nephew and one great niece.

David traveled extensively as a young man. He worked in resorts in Jackson Hole, WY, as an oil rigger in North Dakota, and as a dairy farmer in Wisconsin. In later years, he rehabbed houses, repaired cars, worked in a DNA testing lab, and in concrete and explosives plants. He was very resourceful and valued survival skills. He made beef jerky in a smoker that he constructed and tapped maple trees and distilled maple syrup while living in Canada for over a decade. David loved the outdoors and wildlife. His pets included dogs (his favorite), chickens (his girls), and a
wild turkey. His greatest love was his family, especially his grandchildren. They motivated him to keep fighting heroically through his lengthy illness. He enjoyed playing a grumpy old man, but he had a deep sense of humor and love of life. Children and animals were naturally drawn to him. David was a complicated person—smart, funny, willful, curious. During these last few years, he became gentler and more humble; he softened recognizing the love his family felt for him. He will be missed.

The family members wish to express their gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at St Luke’s for their compassionate care, and to Father Freddy Devaraj, who accompanied David on his spiritual journey and provided support to the family.

A celebration of life will be at 10:30 on February 2, 2026 at St. Alban Roe Catholic Church in Wildwood, MO. Father Freddy Devaraj will officiate. Donations to the ASPCA, other animal welfare organizations, the American Cancer Society, or the charity of your choice are appreciated.
