Dorothy was a homemaker/mother and kept very busy raising eight kids. She helped her children with reading, writing and arithmetic. When she wasn’t helping them with schoolwork; she was sewing, ironing clothes, grocery shopping, or preparing meals. She taught them to work hard and to pull their own weight. In addition to daily household tasks, she helped Don run the printing company they owned and performed all the secretarial and bookkeeping needs. In later years she worked as an administrative assistant-executive secretary at Brown Shoe Company. She was superior in her secretarial and computer knowledge and was always actively mastering new skills.

Some of her hobbies and interests were amateur photography, winning Best-of-Show; top award in her first competition for her artistic close-up of a dandelion seedhead. She loved flowers and her home garden also won the Dream Garden of Affton award in 2009. She was a member of a walking group (logging many miles), the book club, knitting group, and crochet group the ‘Happy Hookers’. She made many long-term friendships in these various clubs. She crocheted numerous beautiful afghans, lap blankets, and hats and then donated these items to various charities (St Agnes House, Nurses for newborns, Veterans Services, and charities that serve people in nursing homes and children in crisis) to name a few.

Dorothy also loved to travel and had a zest for life. Some of her travels included Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Croatia, Italy, Greece, Russia, Scandinavia, the Caribbean, even China and Africa, as well as many destinations in the U.S, including Hawaii.

Dorothy was very generous with her time and many talents and extended kindness and humor to all she met. She made everyone she met feel special and important. She had the gift of gab. Dorothy maintained life-long friendships with classmates from high school, former neighbors, former co-workers, and people she met through her travels, keeping in touch through emails, letters, phone calls, and in-person visits. She treasured her family and her many friends.

Dorothy donated her body to St. Louis University School of Medicine.

Mom-missing you already. I am ever so grateful we got to spend so much time together over the summer and fall. You are a courageous fighter and never gave up, you are an inspiration to many. It was truly an honor to be able to take care of you in your final days. You will remain in my fondest memories and forever in my heart. You were an angel then, bringing joy to all who met you, and surely an angel now so spread your wings and fly high.
    RIP my dearest mother.

I met Dorothy on China trip. She was a
delightful travel pal. Had more energy than any of us. I remember our first lunch with what I called green beer. She poured a full glass while I sipped a little. She enjoyed life. Will be missed.
