Dr. Carl W. Hastings

A Celebration of Life:
Dr. Carl W. Hastings
Saturday May 4, 2019

Dr. Carl W. Hastings, affectionately known as ‘Dr. Carl’, left this earth on April 13 to be with his Lord. As Chief Scientific Officer of Reliv International, he exemplified a good and faithful servant while enjoying life as is meant to be. He married his sweetheart, Jean, in 1962 who were together since 6th grade. Until his passing, he never stopped putting her first, along with his two sons, Steve (Crystal) and Brett (Kristin), and 7 grandchildren, Laura, Graham, Cole, Ty, Emma, Olivia, and Alexa, who treasured their Papa. He was proceeded in death by an older brother, Harold and his parents, Ray and Jewel Hastings of Louisville, IL.

Dr. Carl was valedictorian at Clay County High School (Louisville, IL). He then obtained 3 degrees, including his Doctorate of Food Science, at University of Illinois. Jean also obtained a teaching degree at UI. Steve, his first son, was born as he entered grad school. Carl, Jean, Steve and Brett now hold degrees from Illinois; he was very proud of the tradition.

Dr. Carl was hired by Mead Johnson when he graduated. Evansville, IN became home. He excelled as a food scientist as he was a lead on projects that included Enfamil, the first soy baby formula, Pals vitamins, Weight Watchers and others. While in Evansville, Brett joined the family.

He moved to Mt. Zion, IL in 1976 to join A.E. Staley. He was, by then, known as an expert on soy nutrition. The family spent 10 years there. During this time, he became involved with Robert Montgomery through a relationship with Brett and Ryan (Bob’s son) in baseball. They would team up to form Reliv International.

Reliv became his true legacy. He changed lives with superior nutrition around the world. He holds 9 patented products. He was named one of the top 10 Chief Scientific Officers in the U.S. He won a Stevie award as number one new product, the top recognition, for 24k which he developed with Reliv. But most of all, Dr. Carl Hastings was a dedicated husband, a loving father, a proud grandfather, a faithful friend and he will be most remembered for his compassion and caring for everyone who knew him.

Dr. Carl enjoyed family, friends, traveling to Hawaii and, especially, serenity time at his home at Lake of the Ozarks. He gave to everyone – charities, friends in need, the community – everyone. He was admired and adored by his family, staff, friends and business associates.

Dr. Carl joined Living Word Church in Wildwood, MO with his wife and son Steve’s family and attended faithfully. An accomplished man who gave and remained incredibly humble; he set the example.

R.I.P. Dr. Carl. You did good.

    Thank you Dr. Carl…

You are the reason that my family has used Reliv products everyday since 1996. After all these years, we now have four generations in our family drinking your products. What a gift you have given to all of us!

Jean, I was so sorry to hear of Carl’s passing. I don’t know if you remember me. Jim & I use to visit with you and Carl when you were going to U of I. We were married in ‘62 also. I didn’t realize that you had lived in Mt Zion as we lived in Clinton since 1968. Jim passed in 2008. I was in Flora a couple weeks ago visiting and ask if anyone knew where you lived. I am truly sorry for your loss and my prayers go out to you and your family

May God continue to comfort and guide you during this difficult time; and may the “peace of God that surpasses all understanding guard your heart and your mental powers”. Philippians 4:7.
