Dr. Timothy M. Thompson
Timothy M. Thompson
~October 30, 1955 – August 9, 2018~
After a brief but determined battle with cancer, Dr. Timothy Morris Thompson passed away on Thursday, August 9, 2018. Although he had conquered cancer in 2010 with innovative treatment received at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas the enemy won this round.
“Timmy” was welcomed into the rollicking household of parents Charlotte Hanson Thompson and Morris Milholland Thompson and four siblings on October 30, 1955 in Kirksville, MO. Their maternal aunt Helen Darnell and her daughter Linda Darnell resided with them for a time and remained quite close. Tragically, they lost their mother in 1963. Their father later married Martha Jane Herboth and the family immediately expanded with two more sisters.
Tim attended Kirksville Public Schools and Missouri Military Academy graduating Kirksville Senior High School in 1974 before joining the United States Navy where he served proudly as a medical corpsman.
After the Navy, Titan Oil recruited Tim as a medic for off-shore oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. During this time, he attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana. His quality care, work ethic and charisma earned him steady promotions leading him to head the department of human resources.
Tim then turned his years in the medical field to the pursuit of his real dream to become a physician. He attended Northeast Missouri State University (Truman State University) before attending Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine where he earned his Doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine (DO) in 1991. He completed his Internship and Residency at Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital in Michigan, attaining certification in Emergency Medicine in 1997.
In 1998 Tim relocated to St. Louis where he found the home that suited him perfectly both professionally and personally. Tim served several hospitals and organizations in the St. Louis area, and most recently joined Barnes Healthcare Management. His patients loved him, and he enjoyed the opportunity to build relationships with them which was a welcome contrast to the nature of emergency care.
Tim treasured his hometown friends and a myriad of friends from all over the world. His varied interests afforded him this blessing. One of his favorite pastimes was riding his Harley not only in the St. Louis area but throughout the USA. Tim was an ardent Cardinals and Blues fan and supported the Rams with enthusiasm. His colorful fishing stories from Costa Rica and adventures in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico are legend. Friends might agree that his golf escapades are also noteworthy.
Tim was confirmed in the Episcopal church in Kirksville and attended St. Timothy’s in Creve Coeur. He supported and served several charities and professional organizations and was proud to be a Veteran and a life member of the Harley Owners Group. Tim loved his family. The blended nature of his family did not hamper close relationships with his six siblings. Neither time or distance dimmed or diminished the importance to him of each one. Though he himself had no children, he cherished his nieces and nephews. They will remember his genuine interest and commitment to them for the rest of their lives.
Surviving Tim are his siblings Martha (Richard G.) Andersen, S.F. Bud (Cindy) Thompson, Helen Laughery, Chelsea (Glenn) Berry, cousin Linda Darnell Dripps, nieces Chandrika Collins, Brenda Weinke, Kelly Frohbose, Martha Christine Laughery, Sarah McAuley, Shelley Henderson and Laura Andersen. Nephews Scott Henderson, Joel Andersen, Jeff Meyer and Stephen Meyer. Grand-nieces Tesla Anne Henderson, Zoe Greiner, Stella McAuley, Sadie McAuley, Jaclyn Weinke, Janelle Weinke, Anne Garland Free and Allison Winstead. Grand- nephews Jacob Greiner, Nathan Greiner, Chase Standen, Boston Collins, Branden Weinke and Noah Andersen. Many wonderful cousins will miss him as well.
Tim was preceded in death by his grandparents, mother Charlotte, stepmother Martha Jane, his father Morris, sisters Heidi Herboth Palmer and Sydney Thompson Henderson.
To celebrate Tim’s life, his friends are invited to join with the family on Wednesday August 15 at 4 PM at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church 808 N. Mason Rd. Creve Coeur, Mo. Followed by a service at 5 PM. There will be reminiscing afterward at Sportsman’s Park Restaurant 9901 Clayton Rd. Ladue, MO.
On Friday August 17, 2018 in Kirksville, Mo there will be a service celebrating his life at Davis Playle Hudson Rimer Funeral Home at 2100 E. Shepherd Ave. Visitation begins at 4 PM with the service at 5 PM. A location for Family and Friends to gather will be announced at the service.
Tim’s family is deeply grateful to his faithful friends and colleagues for their unfailing kindness and concern. May you each reap abundantly beyond what you have so generously sown into his and our lives.
Honorary Pallbearers are Pete Detweiler, Eric A. Barnes, Duane Turpin, Boston Collins, Jerry Wait, Bobbie Luh, Terry Wait and J. Tod Sylvara.

I remember Tim during his time at Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital. I was a newer nurse and he was part of those “fun, young doctors”. He will always be remembered as part of our POH family. Gone, but not forgotten.
To all the family, I am so sorry. He was a neat guy and I am happy I had the pleasure of knowing him a little. Thinking of all of you! Eliza Bowen, a Rocky Mount friend
I remember Tim fondly as a medical student and friend. I met him soon after coming to KCOM through our mutual friend, Jake Tomlinson. Tim was a truly good person, and I am saddened to hear of his passing. My most sincere condolences to Tim’s family and friends.
I am deeply saddened to hear of Tim’s passing. I knew Tim as a friend from our childhood neighborhood. I can see he lived a productive and adventurous life. Good for you Tim!
I love this picture of him. I worked with him at St. Joseph’s Hospital West ER. He was an amazing doctor but more an amazing friend. I have talked to him off and on since leaving SJHW. He was always at Sporty’s of course where my sister was at too. He is a friend for life. He will be missed. I will always remember his smile. I live in Mexico, Mo now. I am so sorry I cannot come a say my goodbyes. Praying for his family.
Tim was an awesome friend. I lived close by in Ladies. I will always remember his love for his many Harley Davidsons and the awesome Tequila he brought back from Cabo San Lucas. I pray for his family and have no doubt he’s riding in heaven!
