Genevieve Dean Turner

On Tuesday, October 3, 2023, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, great-aunt and friend passed away peacefully at Parc Provence in Creve Coeur. Genevieve was born in Mt. Morris, IL in the family home of her parents Jessie and Fredrick Dean. She is predeceased by her husband, Robert, and son, Michael. Genevieve is survived by three children: Leigh (Ellen) Turner, Mary (Ralph) Mennemeyer, and Steve (Susan) Turner, ten grandchildren, and twenty-four great grandchildren.

Genevieve graduated from Beloit College and received a master’s degree in education from Northwestern University in 1943. Her career was marked by a devotion to education from her first job in Shannon, IL, then to Shelbyville, IL to teaching with the St. Louis Special School District in later years. While in Shelbyville, Genevieve met her future husband, Robert Sewell Turner, a seminary student at the local Unitarian church. Two years later, in 1941, they married in Mt. Morris, IL. During the early years of their marriage, Bob and Genevieve lived in Hinsdale, IL where Bob was a minister at Hinsdale Unitarian Church. Summers were full of adventure as they operated several boys’ camps in Colorado, Wyoming and Montana.

In 1948, the couple moved their young family to Chestnut Avenue in Webster Groves. The home was the center of Genevieve’s life. In her home, particularly the sun porch, she shared her many gifts with others. Her interests in people and listening to others was, by far, her greatest gift. She also enjoyed hosting bridge parties and attending Garden Club, RotaryAnn, Monday Club, Kappa Delta Sorority alumni activities, and Eliot Unitarian Church where she and Bob were founding members. Genevieve cherished her friends and neighbors. She loved the outdoors and the time playing golf with friends or grandchildren. Trips to Europe, China, Panama, Mexico, and Alaska were shared with friends, too. Genevieve maintained the family home where she and Bob settled for seventy years. Genevieve lived at Parc Provence the final five years of her life. She continued to make new friends and to put smiles on the faces of her many caregivers. She will be forever loved and missed by her family and all who knew her.

Memorial Service is planned for Monday, October 30, at 11 a.m. Visitation prior to service at 10 a.m. at Eliot Unitarian Chapel, 100 S. Taylor Avenue, Kirkwood, MO.
