Gloria Jean Lee

The Life of Gloria Jean Lee

Gloria Jean Lee was born the second child to the union of James (deceased) and Beneva Lee on August 11, 1946, in St. Louis, Missouri.  She graduated from Kinloch High School.  Early in life, Gloria was baptized at Holy Angels / Our Lady of the Angels in Kinloch, Missouri.

After a nearly 3-year battle with cancer, the baton for her relay for care was shared by her only granddaughter, Robbin with whom she resided during the initial stages of her illness. Her very special friend Rosemary Walker ensured she was transported to and from her treatment appointments, shopping, and outings. Her dear niece, Volante (Lonnie) Mathis-Hightower lovingly cared for her during the final weeks of her illness, holding her hand, while crossing the finish line during that last mile. Gloria ended her earthly race peacefully in her home on April 3, 2022.

Gloria worked for the United States Federal Government for 38 years including the United States Department of the Army Materiel Division, and the United States Postal Service for 23 of those years. Throughout her career, she received numerous promotions and special recognition for outstanding performance in her various roles from Keypunch Operator, Central Processing Unit Operator, to Customer Service Representative for the Money Order Section.  She retired in 2005. Post-retirement she worked for Harrah’s Entertainment in St. Louis, Missouri.  Lastly, she worked at Lil’ Mickey’s Memphis Barbeque in Saint Peters, Missouri for Charles and Robbie where she was an integral part of the early success. The family and customers loved her unique sense of humor and the service she provided.

Gloria known to family and friends as “Guvie” and to the great-grands as “Gran-Mah-Mah” loved to indulge in beauty and fashion, shopping, traveling, spending time with family, especially at her mother’s home weekly for Soul Food Sunday dinners, and the annual family holiday auctions where she became known as Ms. Santa Claus making sure everyone left with a gift.

She leaves to celebrate her life her son, Charles Butler, III, and his wife Robbie. Her mother, Beneva Lee. One granddaughter, Robbin Thomas whom she always doted on, Three Great-Grandchildren: Great-Granddaughter Kennedy Jamiah-Nicole Thomas, Great-Grandsons Kaleb Fitzgerald Thomas, and Kaycen Parnell Thomas, fondly known as her little fuzz. Her grand dog, Mickey who preceded her in death.

Four sisters, Jacqueline Mathis (Ray, deceased), Diana Gandy (Robert), Vanessa Lee, Melva Lee, and one brother, Donald Lee.

A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
