Gregory Francis Jones
Gregory Francis Jones, 85, of Hazelwood, MO, passed away peacefully at home on May 12, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born on March 15, 1940, in St. Louis, MO, Greg’s life was a testament to faith, family, and a boundless sense of humor.
One of eight children in a large Catholic family, Greg grew up on “5212,” sharing fond memories of his childhood home. He served honorably in the U.S. Army and went on to own Jones Music & Appliance in Village Square Shopping Center, an endeavor he took immense pride in, continuing the family tradition from his father, Ernie Jones, who owned the main family store on Kingshighway. Greg later worked as an office equipment salesman, traveling mainly across Midwest states, and in his retirement years, as a school bus driver, where he enjoyed singing songs to the children he transported.
Greg was an avid Cardinals fan and loved the outdoors—fishing, camping, and soaking in the beauty of the mountains. A gifted tenor, he performed in musicals at the Muny in his youth and never stopped singing, belting out Irish tunes, church hymns, or favorite songs with a voice that remained strong into his later years.
Greg held his family closest to his heart, taking great pride in their accomplishments and treasuring their weekly gatherings. He was especially fond of Oman, where most of his grandchildren were born. A strong and wise man, he guided his family through challenges, playfully reminding his children and grandchildren that while they were “smart,” he had “wisdom” they’d one day gain.
In his generosity, Greg donated his body to science, a final act of giving. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia J. Jones; his daughters, Heather J’M Jones and Kerry-Anne Jones, his son-in-law, Omer Elkordi; his grandchildren, Zakaria, Amani, and Yusef Albalushi, Kaden Elkordi, and Michael B. Jones; and his sister, Rose Jones. He was predeceased by his parents, Rosemary and Ernest Jones; his siblings, Mary Edith Seematter, Barbara Cerneka, Patricia Smith, and Bob, Larry and Frank Jones; and his in-laws, Gena E. Bailey and Lt. Col Marvin W. Bailey.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, June 20, 2025 at 11:00 AM CST at St. Martin DePorres Catholic Church, 615 Dunn Rd, Hazelwood, MO 63042, followed by Greg’s Celebration of Life at Mattingly’s Sports Bar & Grill at 1:00 PM, 8108 N Lindbergh Blvd, Florissant, MO 63031.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org), a cause Greg supported during his lifetime.
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine brightly on your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you gently in His hands
Doug and I have you all in our hearts during this time of loss and grief. When I think of Greg I think of the many fun gatherings we had when we were visiting our St. Louis roots. Those memories are fond. We send our love and prayers to each of you in your loss. May Greg’s spirit carry you.
Patricia and Robert Smith of Bend, Oregon very much enjoyed Greg’s visit with us, he enjoyed wearing a borrowed cowboy hat when out in the heat of the day sightseeing the beautiful mix of scenery throughout Central Oregon. Greg always enjoyed singing along with Patricia, both would breakout into song with the slightest mention of a favorite; drove me nuts as I needed a bucket to carry a tune no matter what. It was wonderful for Patricia to have her brother with her to revisit old memories and make new ones. Greg was a gift to those who took the time to see the person within as well as the physical person. He is now with him immediate family again, where there is much celebration!!!
