Helen (Kuester) Davis
September 22nd, 1930 – May 21st, 2026
Helen (Kuester) Davis was born 9/22/30 in St. Louis, MO and passed peacefully from this life surrounded by her children on 5/21/26, at age 95.
Helen was an avid learner. Her formal education took place at Maplewood High School (1948), Drury College (1948-50), Elmhurst College (B.A., 1952), and Webster University (M.A., 1975). She could be found at lectures from Eden Seminary to Chautauqua, NY. She was a lifelong member of the United Church of Christ (UCC). In addition, she began attending Camp Miniwanca as a girl in 1943 and was involved in teaching and programming there for decades.
Helen held numerous community service and leadership roles throughout her life. During her 26 years as a minister’s wife, she was a member of the NAACP and co-organized a civil rights demonstration in Kansas in the 1960’s. After earning her Masters, she embraced a midlife pivot working as a counselor at Reproductive Health Services in St. Louis and serving as Executive Director of the Washington University Campus Y (1976-1995), where she mentored college students in community service and leadership development. Upon her retirement, the university established the Helen Davis Humanitarian Award to recognize her contributions to WashU and St. Louis. It is still awarded each year to an outstanding student.
She was a social activist who worked for justice and peace, and a proponent of interfaith understanding. Helen continued to be involved with dismantling racism and volunteered as a national trainer for the UCC, also advocating for women’s rights and gender equality. She served on the boards of Planned Parenthood of Greater St. Louis and the United Nations Association of St. Louis. Helen was the epitome of hospitality and provided a safe, loving harbor in her home for many who needed respite. Her strength, grace, integrity, listening ear and awesomely direct one-liners will be missed by all who knew her.
Helen is survived and lovingly remembered by her children Anne Davis Grothe (Allen), Mark Stanek Davis (Darlene), and Carol Davis Moakley (Brien) as well as grandchildren Miles Bonny (Siobhan), Melissa Shaw (Jon), Liz Bonny (Jordan Johnson), Kathryn Davis; step-grandchildren Arthur Grothe and Mary Jean Grothe; great grandchildren Luna, Georgia, Isaac, Emma, Ari, Ashton, Rosco, and Marigold; sisters-in-law Eleanor Gaye Kuester and Jean Gray; and 13 cherished nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents Ray and Olga Kuester, brothers Don Kuester and David Kuester, and sister-in-law Lois Basta.

Dear Family,
I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Helen. I had the absolute privilege of working for her for a couple of years at the Campus Y and she left a lasting impression on my life.
Helen wasn’t just a boss; she was a wonderful, kind, and generous person. She always spoke of her family with so much love and pride. I will always cherish the memories of our time working together, especially the memory of her gifting my first child his first polo outfit.
Please know that my thoughts are with you and your entire family during this difficult time.
With deepest sympathy,
We met Helen when we moved to The Ashford in Webster Groves. She was so delightful and friendly to newcomers to Webster, and was very lively, walking every day around Eden seminary grounds. We so enjoyed her friendship.
Helen moved to Laclede Groves about three years after we moved in to The Ashford and a couple of years after that, we followed to Laclede Groves and we would see Helen from time to time in the halls or sitting and enjoying the beautiful surroundings outside… Always with her most beautiful smile.
Helen will be greatly missed!
Sincerely,
Priscilla and John Welter
We extend our condolences to Helen’s family. From the years I taught her kids, I remember Helen as an interesting, funny and devoted mom. Decades later, we were privileged to become her neighbors, where we found her to still be vibrant in her 80’s and 90’s. Helen’s life of love and service will continue to enrich so many. Well done, Helen.
Sincerely,
Philip and Theresa Wojak

Joanne and I send our sincere condolences to Helen’s family. She was indeed an accomplished lady and we will remember her with fondness. She was instrumental in getting us to move to the Ashford 10 year ago and for that we are grateful.

Carol and Family, I am sadden to hear of your lovely Mom’s passing. I remember hearing about the fun times you had with her. Her accomplishments are a tribute to the blessed life She lived. Keeping you and your Family in my prayers.
I am so sorry to hear this news. Helen was a compassionate and loving soul. She was one of the gentle giants at Wash U during my time there. She will be truly missed.
I knew Helen through Church Women United.
Helen was a kind generous lady leading by example.
So grateful for Helen’s mentorship when I was part of the Campus Y. I wish I had been in touch the last few years, as I think she would have been pleased after 32 years as an ELCA pastor, I am now serving in the UCC– she took me to hear Walter Brueggmann lecture in college and I will forever be grateful for that and so much else she did.
