Helen Maye was born on April 30, 1934, to the late union of Harry and Arlillian Maye, in Bessmer, Alabama. Helen later relocated to Saint Louis, MO, with her family at the age of five. She professed to Christ at an early age, and was baptized as a Baptist at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Saint Louis, MO.
Helen was educated in the Saint Louis Public Schools, where she met Festus R. Robertson and the two would later wed on January 19, 1952. From this union bore four children: Festus Robertson, Sherry A. Johnson, Patricia Johnson, and Gregory Robertson.
Helen believed the indulgence of food could heal all wounds and bring mounds of happiness. The kitchen was the focal point of our family. It’s where we shared our discussions, laughs, and most of all our love. This also stands true, as she worked as a dietary aide at Compton Hill Nursing Home for 40 years, retiring at the age of 70 in 2004.
Those who knew Helen would agree that she was a woman of great strength and a nurturer by nature. She would go to great lengths to ensure her family remained strong and the needs of all were met. She lived her life simply and strived to ensure her family understood the three necessities of life were: God, Family, and Love.
Preceding Helen in Departure are her parents – Harry and Arlillian Maye, brother – Harry Maye Jr., daughter – Sherry A. Johnson, and husband – Festus R. Robertson.
She leaves to cherish her memory: Children (Festus Robertson, Patricia (Roney) Johnson, and Gregory (Val) Robertson), Grandchildren (Ebony Robertson, Marcia Johnson, Latricia Johnson, and Janet Robertson), Great grandchildren (Lauren Robertson and Mikayla Ray), In-laws: (Ora (Alvin) Andrews and Earl (Jeanette) Harris), and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
A Poem to our Mother:
God Saw You Getting Tired
God saw you getting tired
When a cure was not to be.
So He wrapped His arms around you,
And whispered, “Come unto me”.
You didn’t deserve what you went through,
And so He gave you rest.
God’s garden must be beautiful,
He only takes the best.
So when I saw you sleeping,
So peaceful and free from pain.
I could not wish you to come back,
to suffer that all again.
A Poem to My Children from Our Mother:
A Silent Tear
Just close your eyes and you will see
All the memories that you have of me
Just sit and relax and you will find
I’m really still there inside your mind
Don’t cry for me now I’m gone
For I am in the land of song
There is no pain, there is no fear
So dry away that silent tear
Don’t think of me in the dark and cold
For here I am, no longer old
I’m in the place that’s filled with love
Known to you all, as “up above”
A Message from the Family:
Thank you to all of our family and friends for the love, support, and prayers. The most valuable thing you can offer someone is your time, and it has been simply overwhelming. We can’t thank you enough. With love – The Robertson Family
