Jackie Wayne Turnbow

Jackie Wayne Turnbow, 62 years, died Sunday September 1, 2019 at 7:16 pm at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, from complications resulting in cardiac failure.

Jackie was born May 18, 1957 at Pemiscot County Memorial Hospital in Hayti, Missouri, the son of the late Ralph Edward and Geneva (nee Crotts) Turnbow. He attended Pemiscot County R3 School District and graduated from Caruthersville High School in 1975.

Tragedy struck Jackie on May 20, 1978, when he became a quadriplegic as the result of an automobile crash. With the devotion of his Mother for the rest of her life, he lived using a wheelchair with the help of his family and care givers.

Recently preceded in death by his Sister, Judy (nee Turnbow) Crockrell, he is the Brother of Joseph R. (Cathy) Turnbow, Carolyn J. (nee Turnbow) Elphingstone, James M. (Verna), Charles J. (Debbie) and John E. (Betty) Turnbow. Jackie has many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and other family members that he loved and that loved him.

River Oaks Care Center in Steele, Missouri, was Jackie’s home for most of the last two years. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the administrator, Lisa Kelley, and staff for the love and concern provided him during his stay at River Oaks and while at the hospital. In addition, Jackie’s family extends appreciation to Dr. Abdullah Arshad, ICU Nurse Kristi Peters and the entire staff of Pemiscot Memorial Hospital who provided caring support to Jackie and his family at this difficult time.

Jackie chose to give others life by using his driver license to sign up to be an organ donor. With full support of his family, Mid-America Transplant facilitated fulfilling Jackie’s last wish. His gifts have helped over 75 people. Two people regained sight, two received new kidneys, and others received gifts that improved their quality of life.

Jackie’s final resting place will be near his Mother and Father in Maple Cemetery in Caruthersville, Missouri. Arrangements are made through H.S. Smith Funeral Home in Caruthersville. Visitation will be held at the Funeral Home on Saturday, September 28, 2019 from 10 to 11 am; followed by a Memorial Service at 11 with a committal service to follow at Maple Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to Mid-America Transplant (midamericatransplant.org) are appreciated.
