James Nichols
James Lee Nichols, 74, passed away on April 30, 2025, in St. Louis, Missouri. Born on July 28, 1950, in Houston, Texas, Jim lived a life marked by humor, devotion to family, and a flair for the unforgettable.
Jim was the beloved husband of Loretta Nichols, with whom he shared a deep and enduring bond. Her passing in December left a profound and consuming void in his heart, of which he was unable to overcome. In the final months of his life, Jim found solace and strength in the company of his daughters Bernice, Kelley, and Hollie. Together they grieved their shared loss while forging an even deeper connection through love and remembrance.
He was a devoted father to Gina, Michael, Bernice, Kelley, Hollie, and the late Tony. His love extended to his grandchildren—Denise, Melissa, Nate, Lexi, Surena, Cheyenne, Tony, and Destiny—each of whom brought him immense pride and joy. He is also survived by his brother David.
Jim was known for his quirky spirit and his low-maintenance lifestyle that was a dramatic contrast to his late wife, Loretta. A true original with a mischievous bent for exaggeration, he had a gift for storytelling that captivated all who knew him. Among his most legendary tales was the ever-evolving story of how his father invented the Michelin Man—a yarn he continued to refine with great enthusiasm until just days before his passing.
A NASCAR fanatic through and through, Jim rarely missed a race. Football also held a special place in his heart; game days were sacred events. His musical tastes were as eclectic as they were passionate—he loved whatever struck his ear just right and would play it on repeat endlessly. One of his favorites was “Thunder” by Imagine Dragons—a song that echoed through many moments of his later years.
Jim’s signature accessory was what can only be referred to as “the largest Dr. Pepper on Earth,” which he seemed to have permanently attached to his hand. It became part of his identity—just like Pudding, the honorary dog child who held a special place in Jim’s heart.
Though he seemed to lose the will to live after Loretta’s passing, Jim’s final chapter was filled with love and closeness. It was during this special time that Jim’s children had the opportunity to create a deep bond with him that they had previously never known. His presence will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
May James Lee Nichols rest peacefully beside Loretta once more—and may their memory bring comfort to those who loved them both so dearly. A Memorial Service and dove release will be held on May 16, 2025, from 02:00 PM to 05:00 PM at the St. Peters location of St. Louis Cremation.
