James Wesley Cravens
In memory of James Wesley Cravens, we are reminded of the beautiful words Jerry Garcia once penned after losing Janis Joplin, as they resonate deeply with the loss we feel today: “All I know is something like a bird within her sang. All I know, she sang a little while and then flew on.”
These words capture the essence of Wesley’s spirit, a soul who sang the song of life, albeit all too briefly, before embarking on a new journey.
James Wesley Cravens, known to friends and family as “Wes,” passed away on November 3, 2023, at the age of 46, leaving a void that cannot be filled. Wesley’s life was a testament to the enduring power of love, kindness, and adventure.
Wesley is survived by his loving wife, Jenny Anne Cravens, and their two cherished daughters, Talia Leigh and Mattie Rae. He was the beloved son of Jim Cravens and his wife Libby, a caring brother to Molly and Jeff Matthews, Grant and Sara Cravens, and Justin Foree. His mother, Sandy, and stepfather, Alan Kimbrell, have previously passed on. Wesley is also survived by his Aunt Judith and Edward Watts, who held a very special place in his heart.
During his youth, Wesley was a passionate scout, finding his joy in camping, scout jamborees, and various outdoor adventures. One of his proudest accomplishments was achieving the esteemed rank of Eagle Scout, a testament to his commitment to leadership, community service, and his enduring love for the great outdoors.
In later years, Wesley returned to higher education, where he faced formidable challenges in achieving his engineering degree from Colorado State University. Through sheer determination and relentless effort, he overcame these obstacles, exemplifying his unwavering commitment to personal growth and academic success.
While his professional life was marked by science and innovation, Wesley’s heart was forever intertwined with the majesty of the Colorado mountains, where he and Jenny embarked on countless adventures that painted their lives with vivid memories. Among his passions, music held a special place, and he found solace and joy in playing the guitar. The mountains and the melodies of the Grateful Dead were the canvas upon which he painted his most cherished moments, leaving an indelible mark on his spirit and those who had the privilege of sharing these experiences with him. Above all else he loved his girls.
A small, private gathering with close friends and family will be held to remember and honor Wesley’s life. Additionally, a public celebration of his life will take place in January, offering an opportunity for all those who knew and loved him to come together, share their memories, and celebrate the impact he had on our lives. Details for the public celebration will be announced at a later date.
In memory of Wesley, the family kindly requests that, instead of flowers, donations be made to Annie’s Hope, The Center for Grieving Kids.
Wesley Cravens was a kind soul, known for his gift of gab and his boundless compassion. He touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him, leaving a legacy of love, adventure, and an unwavering commitment to making the world a better place. His memory will forever be engraved in the hearts of those who had the honor of calling him a friend, a brother, a husband, and a father. Wesley’s spirit lives on in the beautiful melodies of the mountains and the love that he shared with those around him.
Fare You Well
I knew Wes through work and only met him a few times, but he was one of the best people I have ever met. Word of his passing has deeply saddened me – always ends up having me question why the good go so young. Wes had a charisma, always smiled and laughed through the challenges of work, and improved the life of everyone he touched. I spoke with Wes for a couple years – sometimes twice a week – and I feel we shared a close working bond.
I will very much miss Wes and wish I had gotten to see him one last time. Wes was a good man, a good worker and a good friend.
