Joan V. Weikart

Joan V. Weikart, known lovingly as “Joanie” and “Granny,” passed away peacefully on April 6, 2026, at the age of 90 in Winghaven, Missouri. Born on August 8, 1935, in Cleveland, Ohio, Joan lived a full vibrant life that touched everyone lucky enough to know her kind and thoughtful mindset as well as her iconic laugh.

Joan was a bright and driven young woman early on who graduated Rhodes High School in Cleveland, Ohio in 1953 where Joan played both Clarinet and Piano. In 1956, Joan graduated in only three years from Ohio University, completing her B.A. in Education early and was a member of the marching band. She also met the love of her life, Hubert, affectionately known as “Hu.” at Ohio University. She went on to post graduate education towards a Masters Degree in Special Education at Kent State University in Ohio.

Hu and Joan married in June of 1956 and built a beautiful life together, raising two sons, Kevin and William. Joan taught 5th grade shaping young minds with the same kindness and compassion she brought to everything and everyone she devoted herself to in her long life.

When she wasn’t in the classroom or on the tennis court; Joan could be found in gardens of every house they lived in, whipping up something delicious in the kitchen, or planning the next big traveling adventure. She played tennis and bridge with her friends regularly for many years at the local tennis club and was very competitive. Joan was a devoted member of Dardenne Presbyterian Church where her faith and fellowship meant the world to her as she served and taught as an Elder with Hu for decades.

Hu and Joan loved traveling the world together, collecting stories, art, furniture, and fond memories from every corner of the globe. They traveled to all seven continents including exciting places like: China, Japan, Kazakhstan, Antarctica, Hong Kong, India, Egypt, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Alaska, Argentina, Brazil, Norway, Russia, Panama, Greece, Jerusalem and almost every country in Europe.  She was energetic, funny, faithful, and had a heart big enough that everyone around her could appreciate her gracefulness and authentic goodwill

She is preceded in death by her beloved parents Joseph and Helen Vascek, her husband Hubert, and her grandson Zachary. She is survived by her sons Kevin and William, and her grandson Aaron.
