JoAnn Marie Richter-Hill, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 23, 2024, in Maryville, Illinois, at the age of 77. Born on October 28, 1947, JoAnn lived most of her life in Belleville, IL, with a decade in Chicago and Rockford, IL.  She touched the lives of many with her warm, friendly spirit. She dedicated her life to serving others personally and professionally.

JoAnn was the beloved daughter of the late Joseph and Marie Sommers. She graduated from Notre Dame High School and earned her master’s degree in industrial/organizational psychology from the University of Southern Illinois in 1996. Her passion for helping others and divergent thinking led to a fulfilling career as a Holistic Psychotherapist, Hypnotherapist, Rehabilitation Counselor and Vocational Consultant.

In 1995, JoAnn married Douglas Hill, the love of her life. Together, they loved traveling and built a warm, loving home. JoAnn was a devoted mother, always encouraging her children to pursue their dreams and supporting them in every endeavor. Her family was her pride and joy, and she cherished every moment with them.

In her later years, JoAnn found immense joy as a grandmother to her four grandchildren. She delighted in sharing stories, baking cookies, and attending their school events. Her playful spirit, playing silly games, singing, and dancing, earned her the nickname “Cowboy Grandma” from her younger grandchildren.

JoAnn was also a dedicated community member, volunteering and participating in numerous church activities. Her compassion and selflessness were evident in all she did, and she was known for her unwavering faith and positive spirit.

JoAnn is survived by her husband, Douglas; her children, Marcie Kolf and Paul (Hoyun) Richter; her grandchildren, Julianna, Isabella, Phoenix, and Pyeonghwa; and her siblings, Caroline (Charles) Sauer and Michael (Montie) Sommers. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

A memorial mass will be held at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Belleville, Illinois, on December 7, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. Visitation begins at 9:30 a.m., with a luncheon following the mass. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in JoAnn’s memory.
