JoAnn Woerndle

JoAnn Tomc Woerndle of St. Charles, Missouri passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on February 23rd, 2026, at the age of ninety, in Weldon Spring, MO.

She was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on December 21, 1935, the daughter of Frank Tomc and Johanna Anzek. She grew up in the Strawberry Hill neighborhood of Kansas City, Kansas and attended Loretto Academy, a private all-girl Catholic high school. After graduation, she earned a scholarship to Webster College in St. Louis, where she met the love of her life, husband Herman (Rich) Woerndle. They were married on September 21, 1954. 

After marriage, Jo and Rich moved to Landstuhl, Germany, where their first son (Rick) was born. They then moved to Kansas City, had a second son (Ron), then Carol Stream, IL, where they had a daughter (Roxanne). In 1967 Jo and Rich settled in St. Charles, Missouri, where they would spend the remainder of their life together. 

JoAnne’s faith was central to her life.  She was an active member of St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Parish, where she taught PSR classes for many years. She later completed her education with a Certificate for Pastoral Ministries in 1995 and an Elementary PSR Religious Education Coordinator Certification in 1997 from the Archdiocese of St. Louis. Jo became the Director of Religious Education for St. Robert Bellarmine and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish. 

Joann and Rich shared a deep love of travel and went on over thirty-five cruises all over the world. They also enjoyed skiing, lake and beach vacations with family and friends. 

Joann was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Johanna, her stepfather Boyd Campbell, her brother Franklin Tomc, and her sister Barbara Hotujac.

She is survived by her loving husband of 71 years, Herman (Rich) Woerndle, her sister Sandy Mihelic, Son Rick (Cynthia) Woerndle of Beaufort, South Carolina, Ron (Valerie) Woerndle of St. Charles, Missouri, and Roxanne (Jeff) Zeiss of Hermann, Missouri, grandchildren Grant (Ally) Woerndle, Justin Woerndle, Garrett Woerndle, Glenn (Jason) Needham, Jessica (Bryan)Mistretta, Ryan (Alison) Zeiss, and Mitchell Zeiss, and great-grandchildren Charlotte Woerndle, Sloane Woerndle, Cooper Mistretta, Joanna Mistretta, and Everett Zeiss. 

In keeping with her lifelong commitment to helping others, JoAnn chose to donate her body to the St. Louis University Medical School so that she can continue her legacy of helping others learn. She will be interred at Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery in St. Louis. 

Memorial service will be held at the Chapel at Breeze Park in Weldon Spring, MO at 3pm on Friday, February 27th.

Celebration of Life will be held at Third Wheel Brewing in St. Peters, MO at 5pm on Saturday, March 21st
