John Donald Wittenborn

Sept 10, 1922 – May 25, 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our father, John Donald Wittenborn of St. Charles, MO. Don passed away peacefully at the age of 99, surrounded by his loving family. Don was born in Chester, IL, and was preceded in death by his parents, John and Agnes (nee Douglas) Wittenborn, his loving wife of 74 years, Adrienne “Mitzi” (nee Giardini) Wittenborn, and his brothers, Milton, Kent, and Delbert Wittenborn. During WWII, Don served honorably in the US Navy in the North Atlantic as Radarman 1st Class. While stationed in Boston, he met and married the love of his life, Mitzi, in 1944. At the end of the war, Don returned to Chester, IL, with Mitzi and new-born twin daughters, Donna and Diana, to resume his career with the P.N. Hirsch & Co department store chain. Don managed several different Hirsch stores in the Missouri and Illinois regions before becoming a merchandise buyer in their St. Louis headquarters. Don was a Shriner, a member of the Elks Club, the American Legion, the Lions Club, and Rotary International. After retirement in 1983, he kept busy with his rental properties, playing golf with friends, and hosting backyard pool parties with Mitzi. In 2015, Don was privileged to take the St. Louis Honor Flight to Washington D.C. where he toured our country’s war memorials with other veterans. But his most treasured moments were spent traveling with Mitzi and watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow.

Don is survived by his daughters, Donna (Tom) Towers, and Diana (Jay) Keyes; Grandchildren, Jason (Carrie) Keyes, Chad (Hally) Towers, and Samantha (Chuck) Sutton; and Great-grandchildren Carson and Parker Keyes, Hannah and Maddie Towers, and Jack and Kate Sutton.

A memorial service is planned for Sunday, September 4, 2022, at the St. Charles Presbyterian Church. A brief visitation will begin at 2:00 pm with the memorial service to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Charles Presbyterian Church at 131 Gamble St., St. Charles, MO 63301

Beautiful video! Your dad and my dad (Bob Wilmes) played a lot of golf together. He really stepped up when we lost our dad, and shared a lot of stories with us that we never would have heard otherwise. Your dad checked in on our mom frequently as well, which was so much appreciated.
I’m sorry for you all but what a sweet dad you had.
