John Lloyd Gunter
John Lloyd Gunter, 75, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, brother-in-law, and son, passed away peacefully in his home on June 16th, 2019 in the presence of his wife Debby.
Born and raised in St Louis, John was a helpful and outgoing boy who loved riding his bike, learning how things worked, and playing pranks on his older sister Patsy.
John, his first wife Nancy, and their children resided in House Springs until her death. In 1981 John married his current wife of thirty eight years, Debby, and together they raised seven children and a granddaughter. In 1984 they moved to Eureka, where friends in town would come to know him as “Gunner”. John was known to be a man who was very giving, helping those in his community with projects and repairs whenever he could. He spent a lot of time playing cards with his friends in the neighborhood, where his skill for the game spades earned him another nickname – “the brain”. He also enjoyed fishing, gambling, and playing the game washers. John spent his career as an apartment maintenance supervisor, and earned his associate’s degree in HVAC.
John is preceded in death by his father John Lloyd Gunter, mother Betty Lou Joseph, and wife Nancy Jane Gunter nee Rousan.
John is survived by his extensive and treasured family, including his wife Deborah “Debby” Lee Gunter (nee Taylor); sister Patricia “Patsy” Hendrix (nee Gunter); brother-in-law William “Bill” Hendrix; children Tamara Ann Smith (Floyd Smith), Tina Renee Grimes (Deborah Cupp), Cheri Marie Chesney (Russell Chesney), John Anthony Gunter (Kimberly Gunter), Shawn Marie Williams (Bruce Williams), Robert Kelly Theiss (Patricia Theiss), and Sarah Marie Theiss (Mike Condellire); and an abundance of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
John has been inurned at St. Louis Cremation. He has requested that no funeral be held, but a celebration of life will be determined at a later time.

Such a Great Cousin and Friend! Great Memories! We’ll miss you, John. Condolences to the family.
We lived and grew up together above Pat and Roses on 7th and Hickory. when I left for the military and returned many years later we had separate lives. But I always cherished my early years living with my brother John and sister Patsy. We have separated since those wonderful youthful years but in the not so distant future and, the Good Lord willing, will be back healthy and whole with each other
Such a great tribute. Thinking of you, Cheri, and all of your family during this difficult time. Find comfort and smiles in your memories. Big hug to you!
We only met John once, but always felt as though we knew him well, through one of our favorite people, his daughter Cheri. She loved her dad so much & told us many of her favorite memories of him. We also know what a wonderful & caring wife he had, Debby. This is such a sad time for her, their children & grandchildren. We want to wish all of you the light of God’s love & the comfort of His healing. May He give you the strength you need to carry you through this difficult time.
