John McCartney

John Bernard McCartney, “Jack” to his friends, age 85 of St. Louis, MO, passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2019. He was born in New York, NY to the late John and Bridget (Lahoud) McCartney on February 6, 1934. Jack was a US Air Force Veteran, having served in Libya, Germany and the United States over 14 years. After his military service, Jack worked for many years as a computer programmer/analyst for the US Postal Service. Throughout his life Jack was committed to public service through his years in the military, his career with the federal government, and his many years of volunteering for both the St. Louis County Older Residents Programs (CORP) and the Alzheimer’s Association. In 2016, Jack was presented with The President’s Volunteer Service Award, an award he was very proud of. He will be missed by many friends, coworkers and neighbors.

Jack is survived by his wife Mary (Milligan) McCartney; by his children Sean (Jeanette) McCartney, Kathleen (Gary) Palmer, Tracy (Bill) Haag, Kevin McCartney and Brian McCartney; by his grandchildren Ali (Jesse) Goodman, Andrew McCartney, Austin (Claire) McCartney, Adam McCartney, Amanda McCartney, Garrison (Jenna) Palmer, Kerrigan (Christian) Murillo, Billy Haag and Danny Haag; by his great-grandson Carter Murillo; by his sister Patricia (McCartney) Durkin; as well as by many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters June (McCartney) Nicely, Anita (McCartney) Murphy, Bernadette McCartney, Dolores (McCartney) Tedder, and Maureen (McCartney) Church.

In keeping with Jack’s giving spirit, his remains are being donated to science. As such Jack is able to continue his public service even after death.

In lieu of funeral services, and to honor Jack’s giving character, we ask that all who wish to participate make a donation to a charity of their choosing. A few of Jack’s favorites were the Alzheimer’s Association, Food Outreach, Operation Food Search, St. Louis Public Radio and the nineNetwork.

Jack – we love you and we miss you. This is not Goodbye, but “See you later!”

A private memorial is being planned.

Jack was a compassionate, caring man, who was always ready to give someone a helping hand and a second chance. He was a wonderful neighbor. We spent many evenings with Jack and Mary talking, laughing, discussing the world. A quick wit, Jack’s humor was present to the end. We will miss him, especially on February 6th.
