John Patrick Quain

John Patrick Quain passed away peacefully on January 7, 2026, at Parc Provence skilled nursing in Creve Coeur, MO after a lengthy battle with Lewy Body Dementia.

Pat was born on May 19, 1944, in Providence, RI to Suzanna Elizabeth Gallina and John Patrick Quain. He was raised in south St. Louis and Cahokia, IL. At age 13 he attended St. Henry’s Preparatory Seminary in Belleville, IL graduating to Saint Mary of the Lake in Mundelein, IL. He returned to the St. Louis area to teach and began pursuing his master’s degree in Psychology at Southern Illinois University–Edwardsville and his PhD in Education at St. Louis University. He made an impact on the lives of many students as a Licensed Professional Counselor at several St. Louis area schools, retiring from Pattonville High School in 2001.

Pat married Kathleen in 1979 and raised three children Kimberly, Kelly, and Brian in Manchester, MO. He devoted his time to improving their lives and his community, including the Chadwick Swim Club as a board member. He was a protective and loving oldest brother to his 5 siblings. He spent much of his retirement loving his 10 grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

Pat and Kathleen shared a passion for travel, visiting 48 states, and later Europe in retirement. Ireland held a special place in Pat’s life visiting the island over ten times. He shared a passion for Irish culture, listening to music as regulars at John D McGurk’s pub. Pat enjoyed the company of his family and friends at St. Louis establishments and hosting gatherings at home.

Pat is survived by his wife Kathleen Donahay Quain; three children Kimberly Chapman, Kelly Vinson, and Brian Acker; five siblings Michael Quain (deceased), Timothy Quain, Blanche LaMotte (deceased), Kathy Doerries, and Jim Quain; ten grandchildren Brittany, Gauge, Savannah, Tyler, Trent, Tate, Grace, Madeline, Mackenzie, and Caitlin; and great granddaughter Salinah.

A celebration of life will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday January 25 at Clarendale Clayton Hanley Room; 7651 Clayton Rd. Clayton, MO 63117. A tribute will begin at 3:30 p.m. followed by a toast and time for visiting.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Memory Café “The Bev Roy Hope Foundation” to support those living with Alheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
