Kathryn “Kay” Smick

Clare Kathryn (Kay) Smick, 82 years young, of St. Louis County, Mo., died peacefully in her sleep on Friday evening, May 24, 2013 at Mary Queen and Mother Nursing Home in Shrewsbury, Mo.

Mother of John D. (Ruth) Smick, Ted (Pauline) Smick and Karen (Terry) Harrelson, and her son James Smick who preceded her in death. Sister of Marlene Egler, Grandmother of Jim (Karen), Brandy (Charlie), Elaine, Mike (Juri), Rachel, Amy, Dawn (Shane), Ted (Meghan), Mary (Julio), and Scott. Great-Grandmother of Jessica, Alex, Tyler, Sofia, Michael, Deanna, Hali, Logan, Kayden, Heaven, Cassie, Kate, Isabella, Richey, Matt and Andrew. She was a special aunt to Sharon Orf, and a life-long friend of Sylvia Bayer and John and Eva Dunn. Sister-in-law, aunt, and cousin.

Our memories of Kay include her love of cooking, quilting, The Price is Right, Family Feud, Dr. Phil, Two and a Half Men, off-color jokes, bingo, garage sales, flower gardens, shoes, traveling, Christmas decorations, New Year’s Day ham & black-eyed peas, and family and friend get-togethers. Beyond a tough exterior of sass and swear- words was a generous, caring person who would do anything for anyone, from preparing a home-cooked meal for a neighbor to donating quilts to charity events and raffles.

Many thanks to Missouri Baptist Hospital nursing staff, Mary Queen and Mother rehab and physical therapy departments, and St. Anthony’s Hospice for making her comfortable during her stays. Kay had many compliments for the excellent care she received.

Thank you to all for your kind words and offers of help. A memorial gathering will be scheduled at a later date.

Dear John, Ted, Karen and Families,
It has quite a few years since I’ve seen Kay, but she was a person that I could never forget. She was so kind to me, and took me under her wing when we worked together. She gave me good advice when I really needed it and helped me smile my way through rough times early in my life. Her inspiration, many years ago, helped me through the last forty years. I will always love and admire her. In spite of many “bumps in the road”, she had a life well lived…her large, loving family is a testimonial to that!
I count her as one of the blessings in my life.
My deepest sympathy to all of you.
    Sincerely, Carol Waters

I know it has been some time. We love and miss you and mention you often in my household. My mom has a bottle that smells like your perfume and I swear she keeps her dogs because she reminds her of Marcell. I know you are with us Grandma as I can feel your presence strong and true. Please know you are missed and loved deeply. I may have been a child but some of my fondest memories are playing/living at your house when I was young. Fly high. RIP. We will reunite one day and I would be more the hopeful to share my life and a few of the things you tought me even as a young child.
