Larry Robert Innis
Annapolis, Maryland – Larry Robert Innis died peacefully on August 30, 2024 with family by his side in Bethalto, Illinois, his home town. Larry was born May 25, 1949, to Sarah Watkins Innis and Robert Innis. He attended Civic Memorial High School and Southern Illinois University. He achieved a Master of Business Administration from the University of Missouri at Columbia.
His career included working for Owens Illinois in Toledo, Ohio where he also volunteered for Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur and made lifelong friends. His love of sailing and government led him to work as a staffer for the Coast Guard Subcommittee on Merchant Marine and Fisheries. He subsequently established his own company, Innis Associates, which provided legislative consulting in the boating industry. He established the Washington D.C. office for Marine Retailers Association of the Americas and worked for them until his retirement. He played a leading role in the creation of the Marina Operators Association and the Environmental Education Foundation. He successfully lobbied for the Clean Water Act and for safe boating legislation. He served as federal legislative liaison and treasurer for A Voice of Reason (VOR), a non-profit organization which advocates for full human rights for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Larry lived for many years in Annapolis, Maryland, where he enjoyed sailing his Hinckley sailboat on the Chesapeake Bay and was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Annapolis and was a supporter of the Chesapeake Youth Symphony Orchestra. He was a collector of nautical antiques and a lover of history. Larry was a dedicated Democrat and was excited about the potential of a first woman President of the U.S. Larry is survived by his beloved son, Andrew “Drew” Robert Goatley Innis, who resides in Corvallis, Oregon. He also leaves behind many dear friends.
