Lawrence John Smith

April 12, 1949 – May 04, 2025

Lawrence “Larry” John Smith, 76, passed away on May 4th, 2025, in Hillsboro, Missouri, surrounded by his loving family. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, John Wilburn and Frances Marcella Smith and his loving wife of 51 years, Cathy Jean Smith.

Larry lived a life marked by dedication to his family, a passion for learning and creativity, as well as a deep commitment to being inclusive and helping others.

Larry’s joy came from spending time and playing games with his family, Luncheons with childhood friends, admiring and collecting classic cars, and music that often filled his home and heart. He is lovingly remembered by his siblings: Nancy (the late Joe) Sanborn, Steve (Linda) Smith, his twin Linda (Bill) Striler, and Madeleine (Roger) Killeen; His children- Kelly (James) Chapman, Jeffrey (Rebecca) Smith, and Scott (Melissa) Smith; His Grandchildren-Tressa (Derrick) Miller, Kristalyn (Ronnell Seals) Chapman, Marisa Chapman, Kellen Chapman, Sabrina (Nick) Castilleja, Paige Smith, Logan (Jordan) Smith, Landon (Morgan Birtley) Smith, Arielle (Dagan) Allen, Jacob, Aaron, Abigail, Benjamin, and Haden Smith; and His 10 Great Grandchildren. His Legacy will live on through each of them.

A true jack of all trades, Larry’s vibrant personality and curiosity was endless, his memory impeccable and his ability to master new skills was impressive. He spent his career at Mallinckrodt in a variety of positions, much of it as an electrician. He was known for his resourcefulness and willingness to tackle any challenge that came his way. A gifted artist with an eye for detail and an imagination to match, Larry expressed himself through various creative outlets. He had a particular talent for pulling harmless pranks on coworkers. With a passion for satire and art he was the creator and editor of a humorous workplace newsletter that brought laughter to many. He enjoyed creative satisfaction in poking fun at everyday life and highlighting the absurdities we all share, all while building a sense of community and camaraderie.

Larry’s integrity guided every decision he made, and his compassion touched many lives. Since retirement and after learning of his terminal diagnosis of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, Larry spent much time focused on his longing for the world to be a better place of kindness, fairness and opportunity. Larry’s passionate opinions on politics were driven by his deep love for his family. He was unrelenting in his views in his desire to protect his children, grandchildren and future generations. He never hesitated to voice his opinions in pursuit of this. Even in his final moments he mentioned the need to continue to protect his family.

Larry will be deeply missed. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him and that it may continue to inspire kindness and strength in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
