Mary “Madeleine” DeSchepper
(NEE DE NOLF), Died January 4, 2014, 11:15 PM at Festus Manor Skilled Nursing Home in Festus, MO. at the age of 94 years, 5 months, 18 days; was born on July 17, 1919 in Huron, SD and lived most of her adult life in Rockford, Durand and Rockton Illinois areas. Madeline moved to House Springs, MO. in January, 2008 to live with her daughter and son-in-law.
Since 1946, along with her husband, Hubert (deceased), Madeline co-owned and operated a restaurant and grocery stores in Rockford and Durand, IL. where they also farmed. The DeSchepper’s also operated a snack bar at Lake Summerset, IL. and were owner/operators of The Amber Lamp liquor store in Rockton, IL.
Madeline graduated from Brown’s Business College in Rockford, IL., was civic-minded, serving as an election judge, and was an active volunteer in several community organizations including the Durand Women’s Club, the Rockton Historical Society and the Women’s Auxiliary at the River Bluff Nursing Home in Rockford, IL. where she received the “Super Senior” Community Service Award.
Madeline had many talents including, playing several musical instruments, singing in church choirs and was an avid crafter who enjoyed many hobbies including sewing, knitting, crocheting, quilting, ceramics, scrap-booking and donating stocking caps and booties to Rockford Memorial’s Neo-Natal Unit.
While in Rockton, Madeline was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church where she sang in the choir and prior to that, St. Edward’s in Rockford, IL. and St. Mary’s in Durand, IL.
Madeline is survived by her three children: Mary Alice Amblo of House Springs, MO., David DeSchepper of Rockford, IL and Rebecca Hambley of Broadhead, WI., 11 grand-children and 16 great-grandchildren
A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Peters Catholic Church in South Beloit, IL. at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 17th, followed by a buffet in the lower church facilities. Interment services will take place at Calvary Catholic Cemetery following the memorial service.
