Marc L. Sandberg

Marc L. Sandberg passed away in St. Louis, Missouri on May 12th, 2026, with his loving daughter, Rachel Sandberg, and his caring son in law, Patrick O’Brien, by his side.

Marc grew up in Affton, Missouri, lived in Webster Groves, Atlanta, Georgia, Columbus, Ohio, and St. Louis, Missouri.

Marc attended undergraduate school at the University of Missouri – Columbia, where he was a proud member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, eventually achieving a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. He then enrolled in the University of Missouri School of Law where he would attain his Juris Doctor. Finally, Marc completed his higher education at Washington University’s Master of Laws program where he specialized in taxation. He would go on to practice law as a tax attorney for many years.

Marc was a voracious reader, with an intense curiosity for learning, often reading five books at a time. He could be found on clear nights, outside, exploring the universe through his telescope. He was also an accomplished chess player, who was thrilled by the complex strategy of the game. In his own kitchen, Marc was a skilled chef whose love for gourmet food was well known, as well as his reputation as a wine connoisseur.  So much so, that he worked at Total Wine after he retired. He kept active, playing ice hockey into his forties, and a bicycle enthusiast into his late sixties.

He was often described as the smartest person you would ever know, and he loved teaching others what he had learned. He is known for his quick wit and great smile. His spirit was how much joy he always had, his kindness, along with his Monty Python sense of humor. You could always count on him answering the phone with an excited, ‘Howdy!’

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marge and Don Sandberg.

Marc is survived by his two devoted daughters, Rachel and Claire Sandberg, his son in law, Patrick O’Brien, who was especially close to him, and his loving siblings, Nancy Bond and John Sandberg. Marc is also leaving behind his nieces and nephews that will remember him for his sense of humor with the way he could always make you laugh. We will all remember that.

A Celebration of Marc’s life will be announced at a later date.

In memory of Marc being such a voracious reader, his family asks guests attending the Celebration of life to bring a favorite book to contribute to a free neighborhood library that will be built in his daughter Rachel’s front yard.

Those who are unable to attend his Celebration of life, but still wish to make a donation in Marc’s honor, are being asked instead to donate to the Atlanta Astronomy Club. You can donate to them via PayPal to Atlanta Astronomy Club, Inc.

Marc loved bicycling and all of us who took part in the Tuesday night Maryland Plaza Ride loved Marc. He truly was an inspiration as both an all-weather “transportational cyclist” & as a friend. All of us will miss Marc greatly.
