Marilyn Spanos

Marilyn Spanos, 94, of Creve Coeur MO and The Villages of St Peters MO, passed peacefully, August 4th, 2020.

Marilyn was born to William and Lenore Reidel August 2, 1926, in St. Louis, MO. She attended Adventist Church school until transferring to Southwest High School her junior year. Her senior year was spent at Enterprise school. She became a secretary at Brown Shoe Company and Gardner Company before marrying. When her children were older she worked at Kellwood Company. Later in life, she used her secretarial skills volunteering at First Bank’s Silver Club.

First baptized in 1926 in the Roman Catholic faith, she would then be baptized again in the 7 th Day Adventist church at age 12, before eventually being Christened in 1953 in the Greek Orthodox church. Whatever her religious affiliation, she was grounded in faith and wanted that for her children. Marilyn enjoyed playing hymns on the piano and delved deeply into the family genealogy leaving her children the rich history of their ancestors. Later in life she enjoyed trips to the gambling boats to play the penny slots. Above all else, she enjoyed being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

She met her husband, Virgil, when both were attendants at the wedding of friends. They married in 1950. Marilyn, Virgil and their children traveled to various states and to Europe but yearly trips to Ft. Lauderdale FL, sometimes with extended family, left the whole family with many fond memories. You could never leave Marilyn’s presence without her saying “you be careful”.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Virgil. Marilyn will live on in memory through her three children: Katherine Derges (Mike), of Missouri; Diane Bertoluzzi (Jim), of Connecticut; and Thomas Spanos (Andie), of Missouri. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren: Laura Heydens, Suzie Knight, Maria Amato, Michelle Simco, Jamie Bertoluzzi and 5 great grandchildren.

Marilyn’s wishes were to donate her body to science and asked to forego a service or memorial. The family desires to thank the entire staff of Villages of St. Peters Nursing Home and the hospice staff of Caris Healthcare for their excellent and loving care of Marilyn Spanos.
