Marlene Lillian Filbert
Marlene Lillian Filbert was born on July 13, 1934, in Westerly, RI, and died on December 21, 2018 in St. Louis, MO.
The adopted daughter of a Marine Corps officer, she traveled throughout her childhood from base to base, including Cherry Point, NC, and Pearl Harbor, HI, and she never lost the urge to see something new.
After marrying Garvin P. Filbert and raising 7 children in Columbia, MO; Mexico, MO, and St. Joseph, MO, she began a career that took her across the American South, including New Orleans, LA, and Biloxi, MS. Often fearless, she enjoyed the excitement of a hurricane and of daringly cheering on the Yankee soldiers in local Civil War reenactments. She retired as a staff employee at the University of South Alabama in Mobile.
Her career complete, Marlene next relived the childhood excitement of discovering someplace new when she moved to Belize. She enjoyed life there for several years with monkeys and ex-pats, as well as her beloved hurricanes. Illness eventually brought her back to the states and she settled in St. Louis, close to several family members.
She was preceded in death by her first-born son, Scott Taylor Filbert. She is survived by 6 children: Laura M. Zacher, Lisa G. Macon, G. Preston Filbert, Lydia H. Blackwell, Brian D. Filbert, and Brent G. Filbert, as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and step relations.
Lydia and family,
Thinking of you at this time with heartfelt sympathy and prayers! What a tribute her obituary was to her strength, stamina and determination! Not only, Lydia, do you have her looks, but those qualities. I’m sure you all elude to some of hers as well. May God, the Prince of Peace, comfort you and leave you with many wonderful memories! Much love, Nancy
Deepest sympathies, Marlene was one of a kind and I always enjoyed her quick wit the few times I was around her. Prayers for the family during this time of loss.
Lydia, I’m so sorry for your loss! It’s so hard to lose that person that loves us so unconditionally! God be with you and your siblings!
Brian and family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Your mother sounds like a very fine woman and that is evidenced in the amazing family she has raised. God bless. Dandridge
