Mary Ann Washburn

Mary Ann Washburn (nee Mumford) of Overland, Missouri passed away peacefully Saturday February 23, 2019 at the age of 80 due to complications of Dementia/Alzheimer’s.

Mary Ann’s story began November 13, 1938 born to parents Robert Roger Sr. and Margaret (nee Seawalt) Mumford in Denver, Colorado; eventually the family moved to Southern California. After attending high school she served in the U.S. Army, where she met and married Robert S. Washburn. They discharged through Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri after daughter Mary Elizabeth was born in 1962. They started their lives in Robert’s hometown of St. Louis, adding second daughter Margaret Ann to the family in 1963. Around 1964 they moved back to Mary Ann’s hometown in Orange County, California. They resided in California until returning to Missouri in 1972 for the remainder of their lives.

Although a housewife, Mary Ann was a very active person with lots of energy, often working in her yard, bike riding, walking, and enjoying “the hunt” at garage sales and thrift stores. When she was at home her hobbies included crocheting, coin collecting, making wind chimes, and spending as much time as possible with her grandchildren, family, and friends.

Mary Ann was proceeded in death by her husband Robert S. Washburn in 2007.

Mary Ann is survived by:

Daughters Mary Pierce (Tim) and Margaret Washburn-Freeman (Mark)

Grandchildren Zach, Robbie, and Mariah

Great Grandchildren Katrina, Tyler, and Serena Jo

Siblings Darlene Mumford, Jeanette Lyons (Carl), and Robert R. Mumford Jr.

Brother-in-law Clifford Washburn (Rita) and Sister-in-law Carol (Washburn) Rauls

Mary Ann had many nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors who will miss her smile and happy disposition. She never met a stranger!

Although choosing cremation, Mary Ann will receive a full military honors service at Jefferson Barracks Memorial Cemetery on Thursday, March 21, 2019 at 1pm. Like her husband, she will have a headstone in the memorial garden. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America; tribute cards can be sent to akamar14@sbcglobal.net.

    Dear Margaret,
I am so sorry to hear about your mom’s passing. . I loved your Mom. I used to see her walking in Overland and would stop and talk to her and give her a ride. I miss the days when Iva Wells and Lawanda and I would go to the rummage sales and we would laugh and talk together. We were all stay at home mothers and could help with girl scouts and have fun together. She is at rest now and I will miss her and will remember her and the years we knew each other.

As a child I remember Mary Ann growing up as we would walk for miles looking for treasures. Or as they would say now. Dumpster diving. As we got older we lost closeness but always loved each other! Hope you find your treasures! Love you!
