Melvin J. Fairchild Sr
Melvin J. Fairchild Sr beloved brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend passed away on Monday, March 27th, 2023, after recently being diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Mel was born in St. Louis, Missouri February 1936 to Russell and Gladys Fairchild. He grew up in St. Francis DeSales Parish. He went to work for Hubbell Metals Inc. in 1954. He enlisted in the Army in 1957. He did his basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri after which he went to Ft. Gordon, Georgia for Signal School. He was then assigned to the Naval Research Lab at the Pentagon in Washington D.C. for further training. Shortly after, he was assigned to Havana, Cuba as a Satellite Transmission Specialist. He finished his military career at the 5th Army Headquarters in Chicago. He was honorably discharged in 1959.
After his military career, he returned to Hubbell Metals this time located in Kansas City as a Buyer. This is where he met and married Madelaine Mercier. They began their family in 1964 with the birth of their first child, another child followed in 1966. In 1967 they moved back to St. Louis and had their third child in 1971. They attended Our Lady of Mercy Parish. He left the Metals Industry in the late 1980’s. In 1992 he began employment at The Villa at Riverwood in Florissant, Missouri. In 2003 his wife, Madelaine passed away. He married Maddie Sue West in 2004. They moved to St. Charles, Missouri and began attending New Hope Presbyterian Church. Shortly thereafter he retired. In 2011 Mattie Sue passed away. He spent his remaining years enjoying his family, friends, and church.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Russell and Gladys Fairchild, his brother Robert Fairchild, his first wife Madelaine Fairchild (nee Mercier) and his second wife, Mattie Sue Fairchild (nee West).
He is survived by his three children: Frances Keating (nee Fairchild) (Tim), Melvin Fairchild Jr. (Christine) and Martin Fairchild (Jennifer). His grandchildren: Katelyn, Anna, McKenzie (Dylan), Colson, and Darius. His great grandchildren: Liam and Lily, and his siblings: Russell Fairchild (Mary) and Marvin Fairchild (Lori). In addition, he is survived by many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
He will have a private burial prior to a Celebration of Life Service on Saturday, April 1st, 2023, at 1 pm. The service will be held at New Hope Presbyterian Church on 1580 Kisker Road, St. Charles, MO 63304. Reception immediately following the service.
