Pierre “Sonny” Pondrom was a remarkable individual who lived a life filled with love, family, and dedication to others. Born April 24,1942 to Helen and Alfred, he was a cherished brother to Guy (now deceased), Frank and Judith, and his life was marked by an unwavering commitment to his wife Carol (Brommelhorst) and their children.

Sonny had a brilliant mind, earning a Master’s degree from Washington University, then thriving in a career as an aeronautical engineer for McDonnell Douglas/Boeing for many decades. He had a thirst for knowledge and a love of complex puzzles, and he spent countless hours writing computer programs, designing dense spreadsheets, and even developing a solar based calendar which compensated for leap year.

Regardless, family took precedence in Pierre’s life. Pierre and Carol’s love story began during their junior year at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, and was sealed in marriage on November 17, 1962. They were blessed with five children; Michelle, Lori, Scott, Angie and Mandy. Pierre made certain each child felt special, and he took time after work to help with homework, science fair projects and transport to sporting practices. Summertime meant annual camping trips for the Pondroms, and they enjoyed spending time outdoors with their large and extended family. Sonny loved games like washers, whiffle ball and cards with his in-laws. Later his love and energy spread to his grand and great grandchildren; Jamie, Tommy, Michael, Carolann, Shane, Corey, Abbey, Lula, Eli, Tyler, Grace, Remi, Rowdy and Sunnie, who all brought so much joy to their grandfather. As long as he was with family, Sonny was happy.

Pierre’s service to his community is to be admired. He volunteered in a program providing math assistance to college students, and was a member of the neighborhood watch committee; working alongside the Florissant Police department to help with the safety of his community. Pierre also volunteered on election days as a poll worker, and offered his assistance with helping senior citizens file their income taxes.

In his later years, Alzheimer’s diminished Sonny’s ability to actively care for family and community, but he continued contributing by participating in an “Aging and Memory” study at Wash U. Pierre peacefully passed away on October 9, 2023 surrounded by family.

We invite you to join us in celebrating Pierre’s incredible life on October 16th at 11am for a funeral mass at Sacred Heart church in Florissant. Visitation starts at 10:30am, allowing friends and loved ones to come together, share stories, and honor the remarkable journey Sonny embarked upon during his time with us. In lieu of flowers, donations to Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org is appreciated.
