Ray E. Steiner
Captain Ray E. Steiner, 86, fortified with the sacraments of Holy Mother Church, passed away August 7, 2018 in St. Louis at home with his family by his bedside. Ray was born November 1, 1931 in Des Moines, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents Bernard Steiner and Henrietta (Schorne) Steiner, his brothers Robert Steiner and Bernard Steiner.
Ray was a beloved Husband to Connie (Miller) Steiner, Father to Timothy Steiner, Nikki (Steiner) Shea, Angela (Steiner) Kraus, Kregg Kraus, and to granddaughter Olivia Kraus. He dearly loved his granddaughter Olivia and could not wait to celebrate birthdays together with Olivia and daughter Angie.
Ray joined the Police Department in 1950. He was then drafted and served in the United States Navy for the Korean War. After his discharge, he went back to the Des Moines Police Department in 1954. Most of Ray’s working career was with the Police Department earning his position to Captain. His neat and tidy appearance to the department was visibly noticed where his shoes, gun, badge and holster were daily “spit-n-shined” to perfection along with a uniform without wrinkles. Ray’s work ethic was above and beyond reproach. He was well loved, respected, friend to many and will be missed.
His God Gifted talents were neverending with bluing guns for the police department, woodworking along with hand carved mirrors, jewelry boxes and grandfather clocks. Ray was excellent at upholstering anything. If there was a hobby or challenge he had never tackled before, he would conquer it. His favorite recreation was to spend time at Clear Lake with his family and friends, boating, fishing and mushroom hunting. But Ray’s overall favorite passion through and through was being a Policeman in the city of Des Moines, IA.

Connie and family. I was proud to have worked with Ray over the years. He was truly one of the Best. I especially remember working the midway at the Iowa State Fair with Ray as a partner. He taught me so much about police work working the crimes against persons unit. In August you two were an excellent outlet for my home grown Iowa tomatoes. I think he really loved those BLT’S. Mark and Jan Boyd.
Simply put I Miss you Dad! I love You with all my Heart!
I look forward to talking to you in difficult times along with “just you and me times” until you and I are together.

Connie & Family, I remember when Ray was at Townsend he often took time to listen to my problems. He gave great advise. He always beamed when he spoke of his family, he was so proud of you all & loved you so. He was a great man who will be deeply missed.
